Find Ancestors

Hi, Im trying to trace details of the death of one of my ancestors and not getting any success.On the1851Cencus there is a record of Martha Dando Age 73 (widow) together with her granddaughter Martha Cook age 7. Martha was married too a Samuel Dando and produced two daughters Martha 1816/1895 and Rachel 1820/1898. It is not always good to assume but in some cases that is all your left with,did Samuel die sometime after 1820 and before 1851.There are so many Samuel Dando in the Frampton Cotterell area that its difficult to match dates.
Any help would be great.

Finding Martha in 1841 would be very useful...............

Hi, Martha's maiden name was also Dando, Rachel married Elias Cook Martha Cook her daughter.

Death of Martha Dando - there were 2 in 1854 but this one same area as the 1851 census. Her age here then is given as 73 which would give a birth year of 1780/1 -
quite a few Martha Dando's in the area too !

But there is a Baptism I presume for her 22.2.1778 Frampton Cotterell, d/o Stephen and Rachel

I did see that Baptism Date but was'nt sure L will check again,

Dont quite understand why there appears to be no record of Samuel Dondo death.

I mentioned only the GRO index.............by definition, that starts at 1st July 1837

Parish records are entirely separate

He might not be deceased when you think.

If he left the family for some reason, then it would not be unusual for the wife to save face by saying he was dead. Children might not know whether he was deceased OR, depending on how the question was asked by the vicar, gave the wrong answer

eg, What is your father's name? Samuel Dando.

vs What is your father's name, and is he still alive? Samuel Dando, and he's dead.

Both are quite correct replies, just the extra information was not given in the first case, because the bride did not realise it was needed.

If he really was a miner, then I think the life span was not great, with many dying in accidents underground.

Samuel is also shown as collier at Rachel's baptism

I am puzzled by the fact that there are only 2 daughters to the marriage.

According to the 1851 Census, Martha was born in 1778 +/- 2 years, so she was around 38 when Martha was born.

Have you found a marriage date for Martha and Samuel??

Ages on 1841 can be out by as much as 5 years, but I fear this is NOT the correct Martha, as she would have been about 25 in 1841.

My hope had been that Mama would have been with them!

The marriage was in 1800 at Westerleigh. Transcribed on FMP as Dandy

I would think it extremely unlikely that the 1816 birth was their first child

Another record, without image on Ancestry , says 5th Sept, but that's just a mistranscription.
The images of both the records above are clear.


However, if this is the same couple, the Banns were read in February, but the marriage wasn't until September.

There are so many different households named Dando/Dandy in the general area, including several Samuels and Marthas, that it's hard to know if the Westerleigh family might be the right one or not.
