As is obvious, I do not get the opportunity to spend time on my family tree and apologise for not responding. I had hoped to be in a retirement apartment by now which would provide time for my tree and my wife would benefit from their activities. However, the sale of our home first listed in October '23 is proving difficult in these times of recession.
I will endeavour to do better.

. . . and were usually not relatives in any case, but just people who happened to have the same names as people in your tree.

Just to add, Hot Matches haven’t been updated for years.

To try to contact someone else with a shared name, go to ‘search’ at the top right. From the dropdown, select ‘search all member trees’. Enter the ancestor’s name and birth year (if known) and when you find the relevant one, click on ‘find out more’ against the tree owner’s name. Send a message and hope that the person is able/willing to reply

Thank you al so much for the efforts that you have made on my behalf. There is so much to digest and a few corrections that I need to make.
Good to know that Philip is not an ancestor I have travelled the wrong path before.
It is mentioned that there is another GR member who has details of a John Arthur however I do not know how to contact him, tried Hot matches.
Very sorry to see Charlotte ending her days in a Workhouse.

EDIT:
PM of thanks received 24 Oct.
Michael will be back to the thread when his caring commitments allow.

Such a shame that Michael thinks this is ‘answered’ as he has entirely the wrong JOHN Arthur for Sarah Keen’s husband, and hasn’t acknowledged that PHILIP is NOT his ancestor

This is a useful list of old parishes and when records go back to:
https://www.hidden-heritage.co.uk/research/sources/parish-registers/

I am not suggesting using their research services.

The middle name Bedley is only mentioned twice. Once by Michael in the early hours of this morning and me later.
I couldn't find a birth in that name.

I've had a look at some of the trees on Ancestry, many of them attribute a middle initial "J", which does not appear on the 1738 baptismal record - so that would raise some suspicions.
I don't have Ancestry World so can't look at the Amercian references but can see from Find a Grave that he is said to have been born in 1738 in London.

Were Henry Arthur 1828 and John Bedley Arthur 1798 born in the US?

I do realise you have a lot on your mind but it does really help if you say where people were born etc.

I don’t know what GD means, but experts believe that a match of less than around 25-30 centimorgans or less is too unreliable.
It can also be difficult to find correct lines from the 1700’s unless you are lucky with records as you have to work through every member of the family at each generation.

A good website for finding what records are available is GENUKI. Google Genuki place name.

Added: so GD is genetic distance and GD of 0 means a match of less than 6-8 generations and 2 is less than 11 or within 500 years.

Michael Report 17 Oct 2023 02:20

I am comfortable with my line thru Henry Arthur 1828 - 1897 and married to Amelia Hitchman 1830 - 1885 and John Bedley Arthur 1798 - 1885 and married to Sarah Keen 1801 -
Uncertain from here

Hi folks, This is my first attempt at using the Community Boards and I am overwhelmed by the response. A Bernice Flowers at GR helped me get started back in 2007 and I have been 'dabbling" on and of since. Now aged 84 and the sole carer for my wife, who suffers with Dementia leaves me with small opportunities for research.
Searching paternal ancestors in Gloucestershire.
New found cousin in the USA (match DNA to GD of 2) believes our most likely connection is probably mid 1700s through a Richard Arters/Arthur (b.1738 or 1741 and died 1825). There are conflicting accounts of his birth. Some say the state of Pennsylvania while others ay London. A Doug Arters and Randall Arters (also a DNA match with me at a GD of 0) trace their heritage back Joseph Cyrus Arters (1793 - 1875). Joseph was a son of Richard Arters.
