Extract

The torpedo struck ARABIA in the engine-room at 11.22 a.m., the explosion killing 2 men. The engines stopped at once, and the wireless was rendered useless. There was no confusion on board, the last boat leaving the ship at 11.37 a.m., and the only casualties were those caused by the explosion. Conflicting opinions as to the number of casualties.................there is a list of names on the site identified above

The naval- history website doesn’t name a Hudson as either dying on the 6th or dying or being taken prisoner when the ship HMS Arabis was sunk on the 20th.

His naval record from either the National Archives or FMP should give more details.

I can’t find him on CWGC either.

Added I see Erika has added to her previous thread.
Look for his merchant navy record.
Added more: the story of the sinking by one of the survivors of the Arabia is on www.peoplehelp.com.au

From a 'tree' on Ancestry

Death of father George Alfred Hudson(–1916)
6 Nov 1916 • on board hms arabia

Not strictly accurate

Arabia was RMS..........civilian..........owned by P&O

In 1915 and 1916 Arabia made three voyages between Britain and Australia. On 6 November 1916 she was en route from Sydney via Fremantle, Western Australia to England when the German submarine UB-43 torpedoed her without warning 97 nautical miles (180 km) south by west of Cape Matapan, Greece, killing 11 of her engine room crew. Arabia launched her boats within 15 minutes. Four armed trawlers and Ellerman Lines' 8,204 GRT passenger liner City of Marseilles rescued survivors.[2]

187 Australians were aboard Arabia.[4] Her sinking helped surge volunteer enlistment in the Australian armed forces.[citation needed]

Hardly anyone uses these boards..............it's unlikely in the extreme that anyone connected will see your post.

When you find the correct forename, and birth year, look in 'search all member trees' and send a message to anyone else with the person in a GR tree

Look at the CWGC site..it’s FREE

https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/

BUT..............get accurate info to start with

Do some research using freebmd…….work back from your mother

Hudson is far too common a name for guesswork ;-)

I believe my great grandfather died in 1916 when his ship was sunk in the Mediterranean of the coast of Egypt. First name we are not sure about. It could be Edmond, Edmund or George. If anyone has a family member that matches please contact me
