Thank you all again for your replies.
Time to move on to more 'official' records.

For our reference -

The 1706 baptism you mention:

William Meads
in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: William Meads
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 28 Aug 1706
Baptism Place: Hurley,Berkshire,England
Father: Thomas Meads
Mother: Jane
FHL Film Number: 88293

This seems to be the burial record they've all assumed is his - in a completely different place:

William Meads
in the London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812
Name: William Meads
Gender: Male
Record Type: Burial
Death Date: Abt 1707
Burial Date: 8 Jan 1707
Burial Place: Saint Giles Cripplegate, City of London, London, England
Father: Thomas Meads

The 1735 marriage is possible, as Clewer and Hurley are only approx 10 miles apart - but no parents' names are recorded, so this might be a completely different William Meads

William Meads
in the England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973
Name: William Meads
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 19 Dec 1735
Marriage Place: Clewer, Berkshire, England
Spouse: Mary Hayens
FHL Film Number: 1279454
Reference ID: item 16

The three children are quite likely the children of the 1735 couple - though not definitely proved.
All born in Clewer - William 1736 , Mary 1737 or 1738 (there are 2 transcriptions on Ancestry, but no image to check), and Susan 1740 .
Their parents names are William and Mary.

I'm not seeing the 1712 Cookham death, nor the 1750s one you mention, on Ancestry or FS.

The "rule" in compiling a family tree is to work backwards in time from what you know to be accurate, with documentary evidence.

By the time you reach the 1700s, if you're lucky enough to do so, that's much harder to do, as there's little info given in records - often only the names of the people concerned, with no ages or parents' names.

Then it's tempting just to start guessing and assuming!

Cpmment - never trust anyone elses tree until you have done your own research and proved or disproved it.
Especially never trust a mass copying of trees as you will never work out which one was the first.

Thank you both again for your comments. Apologies, I should have mentioned I was only referring to wrong info on members trees.
On that subject, on Ancestry, I have a William Meads1706, son of John and Jane and I find 30 members quote his death a year after his birth. No 31 shows a marriage to Mary Hay(e)ns in 1735 and 3 children. Records on FMP show a burial 1712 in Holy Trinity Church, Cookham (which I visited 10 years ago) and a marriage 1735 in Clewer, Berks. A death in the 1750's?
Could I respectfully request your comments?

Terence.

So you are using Ancestry & FS. Have you considered buying the CD covering Henley from the Oxfordshire FHS? (South Oxfordshire Disc 4). These are usaully the source of the information on various websites.

Any ‘wrong’ info on Ancestry would usually be in a tree - the site itself may have mistranscriptions, but they don’t as a rule invent info which isn’t on the original document

Terence Report 7 Jun 2022 01:14

I had not found James first marriage on either FMP or FS.
The wrong information is often on Ancestry, such as the middle name of "May".

Many thanks to all of you again.

One hopes, with all the research help you have been given over the years that you have come across hahg, the Henley Archeology and history group. If you have were they any help?

Re the second wife, Elizabeth Hester:

Elizabeth Kester [ Hester ]
in the Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930
Name: Elizabeth Kester
Gender: Female
Age: Full Age
Marriage or Bann Date: 16 Jun 1844
Marriage Place: Henley on Thames, St Mary, Oxfordshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Henley
Spouse: James Meads [widower, carrier ]

Witnesses: Elizabeth Denton (as for first marriage) and William [ ?? Leaver / Seaver / Hauer ]

According to censuses in 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, she was born in Wallingford, Berkshire.

However, I can't see a baptism record, so no way of telling what her mother's name was.

The 1841 census for Elizabeth Parson says that both Elizabeth Parson and Elizabeth Mead were born in Oxfordshire.
Not that that necessarily proves anything.

For our reference -

this is the 1841 you mention for Elizabeth Hester, per Ancestry's transcription.

also with her , but not transcribed as such on Ancestry, are

James Meads, 35, born Oxfordshire, cordiner (??? can't really make out the occupation).

Going round in circles trying to confirm the results of James Meads b1803 marriages in Henley Oxfordshire. I have Elizabeth May Clark m1832, children Susan May b1836 and Luke b1837. Then married Elizabeth Hester in1844 and then 5 children not until 1850 - 1862.
Elizabeth May died 1839. The 1841 census shows James35yrs, Luky, (or Susan5yrs) and Elizabeth Hester25yrs. But.....another 1841 census shows Elizabeth Parson50yrs, Elizabeth Meads42yrs, Thomas Meads11yrs and Susan Meads6yrs.
Considering the rounding of dates in the 1841 census, Elizabeth Meads b1799 could be Susan May's mother or aunt? As there is an Elizabeth Parson b1791.
Also there is a Thomas Meads b1830. Everyone is in the same town.
Can anyone sort this out please.
