Just going to look at marriage for Thomas to Mary Hunt and 1901 census thanks.

The criminal was the father.......................

The Thomas who was in prison is not the Thomas who married Mary Hunt .

He was Thomas 1856's father (EDIT: as ErikaH also says)

So confusing, all these Merrimans. Beginning to think maybe my relative is wrong about the Judge story but she was right about Uncle John in the army in India. He and his wife Kate had 5 children whilst there, he passed away In 1906 in Surrey.

Probably a complete red herring, but there is the first Baron Merriman, Frank Boyd Merriman, who at one point was President of the Probate, DIVORCE and Admiralty division of the High Court.

Frank is a diminutive of Francis, though he certainly married as Frank. I know the name is not correct, as given to you, and highly doubt there is any connection to your family, but wondered if it was one of those instances where family legend claims a connection to a public figure that turns out to be completely unfounded?
