Edmund Howells was born on September 13th 1809 in Tredegar, Bedwellty district. I have his details coming forward, censuses and his two marriages, the first to Mary Anne Edwards in 1836 and then to Ann Thomas in 1869. Edmund died in 1884. He was an innkeeper in Tredegar. I cannot find his parents. I have found a likely baptism on 24 January 1809 but the name is the other way around. He is Edmund Thomas, son of Howell and Mary Thomas. Other records have shown the name as that and that appears in other trees, although I know better than to trust them without further research. I'm stumped with this one so can anyone help, please? I've tried Family Search, Find My Past, Ancestry and My Heritage without any success. |

I hadn't found that baptism. It's out of his area for the later information I have but that doesn't rule it out. His birth date has come from an old family Bible but that doesn't mean it's correct, I suppose. I think I'll have to have a marriage cert. Thank you. |

Are you sure he was born in Bedwelty? 1841 and 1871 says Breconshire. They are pretty close. |

The area he was born in changed districts from Breconshire to Monmouthshire (Bedwellty). The parish was Llangynidr. It's all very confusing. It's my area and I'm often confused by it! I've ordered the marriage cert for Edmund and Ann Thomas in 1869. Thank you all for your help. |

The marriage cert is here and gives Edmund's father as John Howells (deceased). The address of the farm is correct, he was a farmer and a publican and other details are as I thought except that it gives his age as 53 which means he was born in 1816 and not in 1809 as appears on other documents. Ann was 43 and a widow, living at the same address. |

His age is only as he gave it - even so, somewhat older than his bride, so he may have 'adjusted' it. |

Gosh, you're on the ball! That looks spot on, thank you. The pub was the Prince Of Wales in Princetown. Was that on FMP? He may well have tweaked his age a bit. |

For those of you kind enough to help with this, I thought you'd be interested in Edmund's will which I had yesterday. He was a farmer who owned a pub and he left only the furniture in his house to his (second) wife. Everything else - his property, land and the Prince Of Wales Inn - he left to his son-in-law. He left nothing to his biological family. I'd love to know why but he's taken that to his grave! |
