Find Ancestors

I am transcribing a family document of real importance to us. It is a travel log written in 1950 of a visit to the East Coast of America.

Many familiar surnames are recorded throughout. Suddenly one pops up while the writer is in Boston, Mass.

I just cannot work out how to search this census and, in the past, some kind GR soul has been able to do this for me and find the surname I was looking for.

PLEASE is there someone who can help me with this really important search?

Well, the surname is HAYEK and I would make a guess that the age/s for the family would range from c.30 to c.60'ish. I don't have any first names to go on which is the frustrating thing.

That's the only Hayek I can see in Boston.

There's a Syrian family called Hayeck, in Worcester, Mass, in 1940, if that's any use!

Similar names in Boston in 1940 are Hask, Hoeck, Heek, Hakes, Hack, Hanck.

Can you give us any forenames?

The family in question would be naturalised Americans from, probably, Vienna.

Does the yearbook entry give a first name or any other details, please?

The image shows the name Leo Hayek, Ph.D., Instructor in Physics.

I think it's highly unlikely that he's aged 20, especially as there's a photo which shows a much older man.

Maybe there's another Hayek further on in the 388 pages of the yearbook, and maybe Ancestry has linked the wrong page in the image - but maybe it's just a bad transcription.


He's still a member of the Faculty in the 1952 yearbook, and is listed in the City Directories from 1943 to 1952.

Possibly the same man ??? The 1943 photo would look about right for someone born 1887.
He may have moved to Boston between 1940 and 1943.

He's an accountant with Cohen, Greenstein & Co.
No specific address for him either.

I'm trying to pull all this information together and connect it with what I already know but it doesn't all quite slot into place - yet.

The Leo above must be the right family because everything fits with his pob, Brookline [very specific], etc. and there is mention of Harvard which would fit with the University entry on the census. But 'my' Leopold in our tree is a generation too old.

Are there any other clues, please?

Could "your" Leopold be the father of Leo and Paul?
Where did he live, and when?

Leo was 53 in 1940.
Paul was 52.
Paul's "person in the old country" was not his father, which would suggest that either his father was already in the USA, or was deceased.

Paul's naturalisation application document names his wife Margarethe, who was born in Vienna.
They were married in Vienna on 25 May 1914.
Although born in Czechoslovakia, his nationality in 1942 was Austrian.
Last place of residence before immigrating was Paris, France.
Paul and Margarethe had one child, a daughter Hertha, born 26 Jan 1917 in Vienna, and living in Italy in 1942.


Naturalisation was granted in 1945, at which time his address was 25 Naples Road, Brookline.

Paul's obituary posted earlier mentions a son Frederyk Hess.
Don't know why his name wouldn't be Hayek - and he must have been born after 1942, as he's not mentioned on Paul's naturalisation application.

Perhaps the transcription is wrong, and he was a son-in-law ?? But then the daughter Hertha must have moved to the USA - or they had another daughter after 1942.

The only Frederyk Hess I can find so far of a resaonable age to be a son-in-law was born in 1907:
