Thanks ArgyllGran, I'll have to go through this - so many Birchalls, got my head spinning. I have no idea who this Ann Aspinall is - I've tried all kinds of combinations but nothing works. Maybe I'll just have to accept it and move on. |

In 1851, in Nutt (Nott ?) Grove, Sutton , there's a John Birchall, 68, brewer, born in Prescot, and his wife Margaret, 56, born in Sutton. |

I have a baptism for a Thomas Birchall on 10 May 1854 in Farmworth, to Thomas Birchall and Indiana Nield. I couldn't find him in the census but I did find a death for him in 1854. I got a copy of the death certificate and it says he died 22 September 1854 in Sutton, St. Helens. It says he was the son of Thomas Birchall a waterman but the person who registered the death is Ann Aspinall. Indiana died in July 1854 and Thomas didn't re-marry until 1855, so I'm wondering who Ann Aspinall might be. All the children were born in Farnworth, Widnes, but Thomas died in St. Helens. His grandfather, Joseph, lived in St. Helens so I'm wondering if maybe he was with relatives there. Any suggestions? |

Up-date ... I ordered the Prescot death certificate and just received it. It says Thomas, a waterman, died 27 August 1861 at Crow Wood, Widnes, of typhus and pneumonia, and Joseph Birchall of 2 Welsh Row, St. Helens, was present at the death. |

He's not marked as deceased in 1868, at Annie's marriage - but that doesn't necessarily mean anything: |

There is a Farnworth in Bolton area but the Farnworth where Thomas lived was near Widnes. |

Just found a burial for Thomas in Farnworth for 28 August 1861, age 47. This could be the one mentioned above. |

I guess the River Mersey brings us back to Runcorn, Widnes or St. Helens areas, so maybe I will have to get a certificate to see if that’s any help. |

On the night of the census, April 7th 1861, the vessel Julia, belonging to St Helen, was on the River Mersey. Thomas and Joseph Birchall were on board. |
