I have the birth and death certificates and they do have Caroline and Stephen as confirmation on. He John George is the mystery, I might just have to leave it that way.

It was Stephen Nelson who filled in the 1911 form.

I wonder if he misunderstood what was required, and entered John George as one of his children even though he had died in infancy.

However, there is an occupation also entered for John George (labourer, shipyard) which seems very odd if JG was dead .

Re the different numbers of children -
he had at first written, in pencil on Caroline's line, 7 children, 6 living, one deceased.
Then he'd written the same on his own line in ink - then scored that out and overwritten on Caroline's line - 8 children, 7 living, 1 deceased.
I don't understand why, unless he had confused himself with having entered JG on the form.

I think you need to buy the 1892 death cert to confirm whether or not that's Stephen and Caroline's son.

ErikaH the 1901 census is mine people on it, that's the puzzleing bit really why isn't John George on it if in fact he didn't die and if he did die how is it that he is on the 1911 census. XX.

ErikaH, I didn't ignore you, I don't ignore anyone, there is a lot of info put up on here some of it matches my family history so I'm sifting through it all.
I shall try to confirm what is on here as mine, it might not be in any particular order but I thank you all for what you have found for me.

Tthere are 7 children on the 1911 census...........and , as I said previously, themother says one of eight born in the marriage has died, although the father says 7 born, 6 living, which raises other questions. There is clearly a good deal of confusion

The John George Nelson who died in 1892 (as posted by Malyon) is clearly not the same child - though I don't see his birth.

Census' ask how old a person is and then that age is taken from the year
i.e. 1911 - age 19 = 1892 year born.

But could have been born anytime after the 1891 census taken 5th April up to that date 1892. 75% chance of a person being born the year before the census gives.

1961 - 7 my age at 1961 census. 1961 - 7 = born 1954 - but I was born 9/1953

9/53 + 7 = 9/60 but still 7 on 23rd April 1961 at census time

The 1915 death is clearly detailed on the CWGC site. AGE 33

Birth years on census returns are ESTIMATED - based on the AGE at the time. Anyone born one day or more after the date corresponding to that on which census was taken would appear to have been born one year later than is actually the case

Walter and Annie Nelson did have a son John but he was born 1881

Wonder whether John who died in 1915 has been wrongly claimed by someone

the john george in the 1911 census said was born 1892 there is no birth for a george in 1892

They're wrong..............probably copied blindly from each other

Several trees on ancestry have the death of John as the 1915 death record
