Hi,

I am trying to find out what happened to David Herbert AFTER he was transported to New South Wales in 1835 I have EVERYTHING on him up until he arrived in Australia but I don't have access to Australian records.
He was born in 1812 and was transported on the Discovery 3 arriving in New South Wales on the 25/2/1836.
Ancestry have a record of him on: New South Wales Convict Indents 1788-1842
which records a ticket of leave and a pardon so if anyone could take a look at that record to see what infomation there is, if any and anything else in the Australian records for marraiges, deaths, or anything else that relates to him I would be most greatful.

TIA
Tiggit

Had he married before leaving England?

I don't see a marriage in NSW.

There's this possibility for his death, but it doesn't give an age, so can't be sure, and we don't know where he ended up living.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 25 Oct 2020 12:37

I've just spotted a record on Ancestry in New South Wales Australia Registers of Coroners Inquests 1821-1937 for a David Herbert Death abt 1857.
Please could someone take a look and seen if it relates to the David Herbert I'm reseaching.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 25 Oct 2020 13:47

Yes, it's the same man.

David Herbert
in the New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Coroners' Inquests, 1821-1937
Name: David Herbert [David Barber]
Death Year: Abt 1857
Inquest Date: 03/08/1857 (3 Aug 1857)
Inquest Place: Shoalhaven

David Herbert, alias David Barber.
Cause of death: "Disease of heart, probably Intemperance."

[Some interesting causes of death on that page alone -

The man on the line below him died of "Tree falling on him whilst in bed"
Another man died of "Shaft falling on him while gold digging."
And another was "Shot by Native Police whilst spearing sheep"
Yes, that is spearing, not shearing.

One died of "Visitation of God"]

Thanks AG, not sure why he's alias Barber unless it was because he was a Barber as the initial B for his middle name was Brinn

Can anyone work out what WBRS stands for? I thought maybe waist band right side or wrist band right side,

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 25 Oct 2020 16:46

I think it just means he had those initials tattooed, like the other initials - but what they mean, goodness knows.

Kayak

Kayak Report 25 Oct 2020 18:04

Thanks AG, I suppose I'll never know and I have no idea who A H Herbert was so need to do some more digging.

ADDED: WBRS are the initials of William Bird and Robert Sprague who were David Herbert's partners in crime.
