James Hunter is my Great Great Grandfather and I have been searching for his birth and death over several years with no success. He married Marrion Stupart in Edinburgh on 24 Nov 1837. His age was given as 21 and he was a tailor. 1841 Census - Living in Edinburgh, age between 20 and 24, tailor. 1851 Census - Living in Glasgow, age 35, tailor. 1861 Census - Living in Edinburgh, age 44, tailor. 1871 Census - Living in Edinburgh in his son's household, age 54, porter. His wife died in1868. According to his wife's death record, he was a Jobbing Bottler at that time. According to the censuses, he was born in Eyemouth (old spelling Haymouth), Berwickshire, Scotland. I'd very much like to know when he was born and where and when he died.

Assuming he died in Edinburgh, and assuming he was born 1817+/-3, and died between 1871 and 1881, this is the only death showing on SP(which is surprising, as it's such a common name):
HUNTER JAMES 56 1873 685/5 9 Newington
In 1871 he was living in the Newington district.

Hi rootgatherer, Yes, I have but there are so many it's difficult to make a decision which to go for and unless it said he was married to Marrion Stupart it would be difficult to know you had the right one. Jim.

As I said - that is the only death in Edinburgh meeting all the parameters suggested by the census records.
You can easily check by looking at the image of the original death cert on SP for a cost of £1.50 (6 credits).
Assuming the informant knew, it should mention Marion. In this case, the informant is likely to be one of his sons. His address at death and the informant's address will be given.

Have you found the son David in 1881? I can't see him or any member of his family.
If somehow they are missing from the census, perhaps James is still with them, in which case there's this possible death if they were still in Newington:
HUNTER JAMES 72 1890 685/5 1079 Newington
Failing which, I'm afraid there's nothing else for it but to either accept it as a dead end, or else to spend credits to look at all the James Hunter deaths in Edinburgh where the deceased was born c1817.

As far as his birth is concerned, SP (as you've no doubt discovered) shows no births of a James Hunter in Eyemouth c1817.
So far back, there often were no records, or the records haven't survived.

Hi ArgyllGran, I'd purchased that on some time ago too. He'd been married twice, but not to Marion.
Thank you to you all for taking the time to look into this for me. Regards. Jim.

Hi malyon, James was living with his son David in Edinburgh at the 1871 Census. He was also younger than his wife. Thanks for the effort. Jim.

Although both those places are in Berwickshire, neither of them is particularly near Eyemouth.
Lauder is about 33 miles away, and Gordon is about 25 miles away.
I think it's more likely that there's no surviving record of his birth/baptism.

It's always possible that his death has been missed from the index. I have come across this before. I have never found the death registration of my great great grandfather although I have a date for it. I found the burial place of his wife and contacted the holders of the cemetery records to find out who was buried in the same lair. Sure enough he was buried there and I got the date of burial. As the family weren't well off, I'm fairly sure he died in Glasgow but I've checked every death registered in Scotland with all variations of his name and age without success. It is disappointing as he was born in Ireland and it was my only hope of finding his mother's name.
