As there were no penalties for not registering births until 1875, his may simply not have been registered.

Dear researchers
I wonder if you can help me at all. My grandmother on my mother's side was Sarah Elizabeth Davies who was born on 16/3/1878 in Bottom Locks Runcorn. I have her birth certiticate. Her parents were Thomas Henry Davies and Tryphena New. I have located a birth certificate for Tryphena New-born 21/1/1852 at Foxyards, Woodsetton, Sedgley, Staffordshire. Unfortunately I cannot trace a marriage between Tryphena and Thomas although I can trace birth certificates for all of their children and death certificates for both of them. Both Thomas and Tryphena's father Benjamin New are described as boatmen and they seem to be missing from various censuses-possibly due to being on boats at the time.Indeed the earliest census record I can find for Thomas is the 1891 census where he is described as living with Tryphena at Boat Stage, Lymm, Cheshire aged 38 with an estimated date of birth of 1853 in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. I cannot trace any birth certificate or baptism for him from this info. Regrettably Davies is a very common name. As I cannot trace a marriage certificate either I do not seem to be able to find out who his parents were. Any help would be appreciated and if further info is required I may be able to provide it.
Kind regards
Howard Stubbings
