Help please I'm looking for a relative whose grandfather was Thomas Moore, born at Bridge Street, Croyden . (1910-1970)
In 1933 he married Ethel May Turner 1905-1941)
His mother is apparently Ellen Emma Moore.
I was told he was a Barnardos lad who was 'fostered' by my great- grandparents, but this relative has my great grandfather down as being married to Ellen which I know he wasn't, could anyone please find the correct parents of Thomas Please
At the moment I don't have any credits to look up records. Thank you for any help

Possibly this birth - the dash under MMS usually means that as no mms is listed that the child was illegitimate. If he was registered in that way and no Father was named, you are very unlikely to find out who the Father was.

The certificate would name his Mother to confirm.

Is there any mention of a Father's name on his marriage certificate?

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
MOORE, THOMAS -
GRO Reference: 1910 J Quarter in CROYDON Volume 02A Page 281

You don't need credits on GR to look for bmd.

There are 2 free sites which you should put in your favourites and learn your way around how to use them. Each has it's advantages. Both are free, but you need to register initially with the GRO site. Certificates can be obtained through the site - but very much delayed at present. As the birth is over 100 years ago you can get a digital copy for £7 ish, cheaper than a certified copy.

Thanks greyghost, I've used Freebmd, and to be honest I never think of the GRO site so I'll remember in future
I did wonder if Thomas Moore could be illegitimate and that's why he became a Barnardos boy,
Yes that is Thomas' death
I know my Great Grandparents took Thomas in and looked after him but I also know my Gt-Grandad was not his father, I think I will have to let the relative know otherwise their tree will not be right, I will ask about the birth certificate too.
Thank you for you help and for nudging me to look at GRO, Thank you.
(just realised its gone midnight - sleep is calling) Goodnight and thanks again

As no father was named on the birth cert, your relative will never know who Thomas's father was.

If he was indeed fostered by your gt-grandparents, your gt-grandfather will be the nearest thing he had to a father, so he will just have named him as father when he married.

Hi ArgyllGran, It was an unofficial fostering, apparently Thomas was camping near to my Gt Grandparents cottage, he made friends with the couples 6 children, they took him in and he never left. I think he was about 16.
I need to contact this distant relative to tell him that Gt Grandfather was definitely not married to Thomas' mother so that he can correct his family tree, I think he mistakenly jumped a generation when adding to his tree. I was just hoping that if any more information about Thomas' parents was found then I could pass the correct details on. But I agree Thomas could well have put his "foster" father down as his father on the certificate.
