Hi ArgyllGran, It was an unofficial fostering, apparently Thomas was camping near to my Gt Grandparents cottage, he made friends with the couples 6 children, they took him in and he never left. I think he was about 16.
I need to contact this distant relative to tell him that Gt Grandfather was definitely not married to Thomas' mother so that he can correct his family tree, I think he mistakenly jumped a generation when adding to his tree. I was just hoping that if any more information about Thomas' parents was found then I could pass the correct details on. But I agree Thomas could well have put his "foster" father down as his father on the certificate.

As no father was named on the birth cert, your relative will never know who Thomas's father was.

If he was indeed fostered by your gt-grandparents, your gt-grandfather will be the nearest thing he had to a father, so he will just have named him as father when he married.

I did wonder if Thomas Moore could be illegitimate and that's why he became a Barnardos boy,
Yes that is Thomas' death
I know my Great Grandparents took Thomas in and looked after him but I also know my Gt-Grandad was not his father, I think I will have to let the relative know otherwise their tree will not be right, I will ask about the birth certificate too.

Possibly this birth - the dash under MMS usually means that as no mms is listed that the child was illegitimate. If he was registered in that way and no Father was named, you are very unlikely to find out who the Father was.

The certificate would name his Mother to confirm.
