The FMP record shown by Kay doesn't appear to be him, IF it has been transcribed correctly!

Only US records are on Fold3 if you go direct to their website.

But there are UK records if you access them through Ancestry, plus a Fold3 membership (or 7-day free trial).

However, I don't see any likely looking John McAlpine army records on Ancestry.
Lots of John McAlpines, but none that look as if they might be the right one, if he was living in the Linlithgow/Haddington/general Edinburgh-ish area.

There's this one in Musselburgh, but not Berwickshire Militia. This is a list of serjeants:

John McAlpine
in the UK, British Army Muster Books and Pay Lists, 1812-1817
Name: John McAlpine
Start of Muster: 25 Dec 1812
End of Muster: 24 Mar 1813
Stationed or Muster Place: Musselburgh Barracks
Regiment or Unit: 1st Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots), 4th Battalion
Piece Number: 2019

Image viewable on Ancestry - no need for Fold3 for this one.

Hi
Apparently I've asked for info before but just to put my mind at rest can anyone look at this record please
UK Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Service Records 1760- 1920
Private John McAlpine
Age 22
Discharge age 41
Birth date 1785
Birth Place St Ninicans Stirling
Enlistment year 1807
Discharge year 1826
75 reg of foot

This is all I can see on ancestry but wondering what else the original certificate says. The dates seem to match my John McAlpine and as I don't know where he was born !!

It seems ONLY to be on Fold3, so you will need to take out a free trial

If anyone one here had paid for Fold3, they would have looked at it for you when you asked originally

Posting for INFO..................

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census
High Street, Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire (West Lothian), Scotland
John McAlpin Male 55 1786 Scotland Occupation Shoem
Margaret McAlpin Female 55 1786 Scotland
Stewart McAlpin Male 15 1826 Linlithgowshire (West Lothian), Scotland
Archibald McLean Male 20 1821 Linlithgowshire (West Lothian), Scotland
Archibald Crooks Male 20 1821 Linlithgowshire (West Lothian), Scotland

When did he die? Have you looked at the death cert?

ArgyllGran

More about that man on Ancestry - ie - the St Ninians man:

John McAlpin
in the Edinburgh, Scotland, Army Attestation Registers, 1796-1857
Name John McAlpin
Attestation Age 22
Birth Date abt 1785
Residence Date 1807
Military Regiment 75th
Attestation Date 24 Aug 1807
Attestation Place Edinburgh, Scotland

As far as I can see, the 75th Regiment of Foot was nothing to do with the Berwickshire Militia.

I looked at the 1807 marriage record on SP last year.

The transcription posted by Alviegal contains mistakes.

The original says he was a soldier in the Berwickshire Militia, as Sylann has said.

It was a William Horn, whose marriage is listed above John McAlpin's on the original document, who was in the 26th Regiment.

Also, John's surname is spelled McCalpin on the document, not McCalpane.

And -
the "cautioners" ( a bit more than witnesses - more like guarantors) were Gavin Tosh and George McCalpin

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 29 Mar 2024 11:10

The marriage and the 1841 census both show the name with NO 'e' on the end....................I know that isn't necessarily 100%, but surely the OP should be looking in the first instance for records with that spelling

Birth of child also NO 'e'
