From the originals - previously in the Dorsetshire Regiment and a Reserves Regiment 5.4.00 to 4.4.01

Then attested as Maddie's post

Discharged 8.8.1905 at own request with £21 bounty

Served Home (i.e. GB)for 2 months then Malta 20/9/01 to 20/4/04 followed by Africa 21.4.04 to 4.8.05. 3 days Home before discharge.
Son David and daughter Rosina at home address with Maria. Son Thomas in Essex Regiment.

Further documents show he attested to the Dorset Regiment at Dorchester 17 June 1885 aged 24 yr 11 months. Born Whitechapel. He had resided out of his Father's home for at least 3 years at 24 Sheridan Street, Commercial Road, London

(Says he had previously served in the 3rd Middlesex Regiment)

but she seems to marry 1879 to someone else

I am doing some work on David Burns and |I'm not sure the person I have in the 1901 census is the same David. I also can't find a marriage between him and Maria. I definitely have him in 1861 and 1871. I can't find him in 1881 or 1891. He possibly turns up in 1901 married to Maria but the birthplace is St. George;s in the East instead of Whitechapel. I'm pretty sure he's back in the 1911 census the same as the first two.
