(a bit late in the day for 'Thread', lol, but below...
Chris :)
23 April 1874 - Southern Reporter - Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland
Marriage Thomas M'Donald, quarryman, to Maria Haynes, daughter of the late Mr. Martin Haynes, labourer.
(looking round on later Census, things Overhaugh Street, seems to be a few McDonalds about, if they relate in family. Even into 1920's with a few 'fights' according to Newspapers, lol)

Thanks so much! I didn't know about the settings, so that's very kind to download them yourself. Great, so it looks like Thomas McDonald's wife's name was Margaret Judge? And Thomas was born in Kirkudbrightshire?
That's great to find out about the other siblings, Peter, Thomas, Neil and Arthur.

OK - 1871 census.
Places of birth: William - Paisley, Renfrewshire. Margaret - Ireland Thomas - Creetown, Kirkcudbrightshire [but spelled Creeton on the image] Arthur - Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Actually, all the places are given clearly on Ancestry, and probably also on FMP:
Thomas Mcdonald in the 1871 Scotland Census Name: Thomas Mcdonald Age: 26 Estimated birth year: abt 1845 Relationship: Son Father's name: William Mcdonald Mother's name: Margaret Mcdonald Where born: Creeton, Kirkcudbrightshire Registration Number: 789 Registration district: Hawick Civil Parish: Hawick Town: Hawick County: Roxburghshire Address: 6 Mid Row Occupation: Ag Lab ED: 10 Household schedule number: 75 Line: 18 Roll: CSSCT1871_179 Household Members: Name Age William Mcdonald 62 - Paisley, Renfrewshire Margaret Mcdonald 61 - Ireland Thomas Mcdonald 26 - Arthur Mcdonald 19 - Hawick, Roxburghshire

Thanks for that. The marriage certificate is from Scotland's People. The link is here: https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/103323876
There is also the census from 1871 from Hawick, Scotland, with Thomas McDonald at home with this father William and siblings. It also has some places of birth on it that I am having difficulty reading. Any ideas? https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/103323878

I have some more questions! I have the marriage record of Thomas McDonald and Maria Haynes, Margaret's parents. It has on it her parents names and also the two maiden names, but I am having difficulty reading the handwriting. Is there a way to attach pictures of the certificate???

That's interesting. So Ancestry thinks that Haynes could be Hynes which could be the same as Einnes which could the same as Innes.
Presumably some of this being mistakes in transcribing records, and some because the same name was sometimes spelt multiple ways?

As it looks likely that we have found the right family, on the 1891 census Ancestry is suggesting this for Maria Hynes in 1861:
Mary Rynes [Mary Hynes] Age: 9 Estimated birth year: abt 1852 Relationship: Daughter Father's name: Martin Rynes Mother's name: Mary Rynes Gender: Female Where born: Ireland Registration Number: 792 Registration district: Jedburgh Civil Parish: Jedburgh County: Roxburghshire Address: 1 Bongate Occupation: Scholar ED: 5 Household schedule number: 59 Line: 5 Roll: CSSCT1861_140 Household Members: Name Age Martin Rynes 58 Mary Rynes 40 Patrick Rynes 23 Budget Rynes 14 Mary Rynes 9 Margaret Rynes 5 Arthur McKanna 25
Only daughter Margaret born in Scotland, parents siblings born Ireland.
and this for 1871:
Maria Hynes Age: 21 Estimated birth year: abt 1850 Relationship: Daughter Mother's name: Mary Hynes Gender: Female Where born: Ireland Registration Number: 792/1 Registration district: Jedburgh Burgh Civil Parish: Jedburgh County: Roxburghshire Address: 10 Abbey Close Occupation: Domestic Son ED: 2 Household schedule number: 18 Line: 6 Roll: CSSCT1871_179 Household Members: Name Age Mary Hynes 52 Maria Hynes 21 Margaret Hynes 14 John Littlewood 66 Peter Whitte 49 Michael Maginness 60
Don't know if this is correct though, ancestry often suggest other records which are not right.

Fantastic. I have ordered the death certificate, so I can be certain about dates, but all the other information matches up with what we know!
That's very interesting that their border was in a domestic violence incident. I can' t believe how much information is available. I had had a few attempts to track Margaret but always thought it would be too difficult as its such a common name. On behalf of our family, thanks very much for all the help!

I've gone back to my earlier post on the birth for Margaret - I didn't look at my notes properly and used the wrong dates. The birth registration confirms Chris's baptism giving dob.

Going back to Census below, posted earlier, I wondered if that Einnes was Hynes!, looking at Baptism Record, Margaret, 1878 (Scotland Roman Catholic, FMP) Sponsors, Michael Sharky, Margaret Hynes. They have Birthdate as 9th July 1878 and Baptism 14th July 1878. Parents Thomas Macdonald and Maria Hynes.

Fantastic, thanks so much. That marriage between James Murray and Mary Ann Burt was the first marriage of my grandfather James, before he married my grandmother Dolly ~1941 or so (Mary Ann, called Molly, died of TB around about 1938). The little girl Alice who was with Margaret and family in 1939 was my aunt.
Great that you found her death record - I will send for the certificate. Can't thank you enough for all this, :-D, Shauna

Ok. I just checked in with my father, who confirmed some extra information that I didn't have.
He thinks this is definitely the right family, because he knew that her mother's name was Maria, and that she had a sister called Florence. Also he confirmed that she did have family living somewhere in the Newcastle area, so the parents later moving from Scotland to Durham would seem to be true.
He believes she died in Weybridge, Surrey around 1960, instead of 1958.
Thanks for all that digging, you've really helped ! :-D
