As well as her daughter Marlene, Frances had a son Malcolm in 1940 in Leeds.

Presumably she was no longer with William Britton, as he was apparently not the father.

The fact Bertha is an open record on the 1939 register means they have picked up her death but not seeing it

1939 written in green,does it say her death something like 2/11/73 ?

It doesn't say anything about Bertha/Mary's death, and doesn't indicate the reason for the change.

i don't know who the walter born 1892 in 1939 reg is, my walter was born 1906. Is it a coincidence he was also divorced. Could frances have put divorced to save face and never married william britton because she was still married

I don't think the other Walter Patchett is necessarily anything to do with yours.
Patchett seems to be a very common name in that part of the country.


It's certainly possible that Frances wasn't telling the truth in 1939, when she said she was divorced - but we'll never know. I think it's more likely she was telling the truth. After all, she could have called herself Britton for respectability, and claimed to be married - but instead she was honest.
We do know she remarried in 1947.
