Interesting. Maybe that's why went towards Yorkshire if he is from Durham. I'll look more closely at that then. Perhaps if they had children who died before birth that woukd explain why no child until 1901 if they married in 1895. Maybe met in Yorkshire then moved back towards her place of birth here then back to near Skipton again after marriage to have edward

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 09:27

I'm thinking it's still odd that they married in Skipton Yorkshire. And on wedding certificate it has him as 33 and her as 22. A bit out ThT I think. That for him. Unless he was pretending to be younger.. Not unusual to lie about age though I guess. I think you have hit home with this.
Are you able to find James on the 1891 at all?
Thanks

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 09:30

If we can get James closer to Skipton in 1891 then I'll think it's all good. His father was deceased on his wedding certificate in 1895 in Skipton. Wonder if they are on the 1891.maybe James dad had to travel as an innkeeper to new pubs like they do now

Ah ah. Just found a wedding of Lewis Preston and Mary Rowling in 1896 think on Knaresborough which is nearish to Skipton. I think thst often happened didn't it thst the witnesses were an engaged couple.
So think it is definately Rowling. Rowling is a Durham name I think anyway. Think? Preston is maybe Yorkshire as it coukd be from long Preston. I'm fascinated with names. Ignore me ha ha.
Does this help dea? To know that their witnesses were an engaged couple called Lewis Preston and Mary Rowling who married shortly after?

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 10:00

I found a Lewis Preston born in Worcester and one born in Yorkshire not a common name Lewis Preston. If its the Worcester one then that woukd be good

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 10:01

Think it's more likely to be the Skipton Lewis Preston in 1869 than the Lewis Preston in 1860 from Worcester but you never kniw.

Lewis and Mary were both born in Yorkshire - this would be them:

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Ivy Cottage, Carleton, Carlton, Skipton, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding),

Members that resided in the household at the time of the census.
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place

William R Preston Son Single Male 2 1899 - Carleton, Yorkshire, England
Ann Oldfield Boarder Single Female 45 1856 Cotton Drawer Carleton, Yorkshire, England

They were probably just friends..............

P.S. - What do you think about the 1881 above for Emma?

I see that Emma's mother Fanny was also connected to the 'drapery business'

Now, I just found that Emma moved up to Hartlepool by 1901 - this was where James had been in 1891 BUT I then noticed that Emma was still at her parents home when she should by now have been married to James !!

However, just when I decided it couldn't be her I realised that although she is still shown under her maiden name, with her family, she is in fact marked as 'married' ...

So, I feel sure that it is her !
1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census
13, Everett Street, West Hartlepool, Hartlepool, Durham, England

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
James Bannister Head Married Male 54 1847 Shipyard Labourer Herefordshire, England
Fanny Bannister Wife Married Female 50 1851 - Worcestershire, England
**Emma Bannister Daughter **Married** Female 28 1873 - Worcestershire, England
James Bannister Son Single Male 26 1875 Shipyard Labourer Herefordshire, England
Winifred Bannister Daughter Single Female 19 1882 - Worcestershire, England
Samuel Bannister Son - Male 15 1886 Farm Servant Worcestershire, England
Jessie Bannister Daughter - Female 13 1888 - Worcestershire, England
Francis H Bannister Son - Male 11 1890 - Worcestershire, England
Fanny Bannister Daughter - Female 9 1892 - Yorkshire, England
Walter Bannister Son - Male 2 1899 - West Hartlepool, Durham, England

She could have been recorded with the family in error or perhaps she was visiting at the time so included and James included her with him as that was where she actually lived. - I have seen people recorded in two places on a census several times before.

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 18:01

Mm maybe. Hartlepool woukd work though. She wasn't actually a bannister either was she, a Mitchell, and either James was her step father or her real dD and her mum had her out of wedlock

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 18:07

Yes think that's definately her. You may be right about being on two census. As they had no children and she coukd even have commuted between the two although Worcester and hartlepool are quite far apart. Maybe James had another woman with him on census night who pretended to be Emma. Maybe the reason they had no children is because they were hardly together until 1901. And maybe he was a bit of a cad ????

Shirley Report 4 Jul 2019 18:11

Hi dea
Looks like fanny Mitchell and James bannister married in 1881 so they had only just married each other on that census in Worcester it seems.
