Hi Clive,

I had the same thought as you when I looked at the marriages- thinking that perhaps Mary Ann Goodwin was related.

However, I don't see any connection and wonder if Susanna simply took rthe surname of Mary Ann to cover her already married status:

Name: Mary Ann Goodwin
Gender: Female
Marriage Age: 22
Record Type: Marriage
Birth Year: abt 1833
Marriage Date: 19 Feb 1855
Marriage Place: Chatham, St Mary, Kent, England
Father: Joseph Goodwin
Spouse: James Griffiths

Eliza Goodwin Wife Married Female 50 1801 - Sheerness, Kent,
Mary Ann Goodwin Daughter Unmarried Female 18 1833 - Chatham, Kent,

Mary Ann with husband in 1861:

Also, the witnesses to the marriage of Susanna Goodall to George Goodall in Wavendon in 1846 were David Billington or Willington and Mary Cook.

The Cook/ Cooke name is definitely linked somehow...

Thanks All.

I wonder if some of them may be using their middle names on census and official name on birth, marriage death?

Austin Q previously posted the following as probable marriage of Susanna to Samuel Murden in Chatham ( an army town I believe):

Name: Samuel Murden
Registration Year: 1855
Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration district: Medway
Inferred County: Kent
Volume: 2a Page: 315
Mary Ann Goodwin
Susan Maria Goodwin<<<<<<<<<<<
James Griffiths
Samuel Murden <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Who would Mary Ann be? A witness? If so, probably another sister?

Has anyone seen a Mary Ann Goodall with a sister Caroline anywhere?

Also, is the middle name a clue also?

Probably Susan(na) in 1851 - apologies if already posted:

Susan Goodhall
in the 1851 England Census
Name: Susan Goodhall
Age: 24
Estimated birth year: abt 1827

I can't see her in 1841 so far.

I agree with your last post, AQ, though hadn't delved as far as you have.

It could well be that "Mary" is a mistake on either Susanna's birth record, or the transcription.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 13 Jul 2019 10:23

I think the death for Susanna Murden is the lady that married George Goodhall.

If Caroline lists herself as Susanna's sister, I think there must be some family connection. I also think it likely that they were both born to the same Joseph.

It's a shame I can't see an original of Susanna's baptism. I cannot see a marriage between a Joseph Goodhall and Mary that would fit. I also don't see any other baptism in Wavendon with father Joseph and mother Mary.
---------------------

There are a few oddities within the family. This is them in 1841:

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Church End, Wavendon, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England

Joseph Goodall Male 35 1806 Buckinghamshire, England
Paulliner Goodall Female 33 1808 Buckinghamshire, England

Sarah Goodall Female 3 1838 Buckinghamshire, England
Thomas Goodall Male 1 1840 Buckinghamshire, England

Births:
GOODHALL, SARAH COOKE

(likey death for this Sarah in 1845 aged 8)

GOODHALL, THOMAS COOKE
GRO Reference: 1840 J Quarter in NEWPORT PAGNEL UNION Volume 06 Page 389
(likely death for Thomas in 1845 aged 5)
--------------------------

There is no Susanna with them in 1841- although she could've been in service or living with a relative.

Same family in 1851:

1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Wavendon, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England

Joseph Goodhall Head Married Male 54 1797 Labor Wavendon, Buckingham
Paullna Goodhall Wife Married Female 46 1805 Lace Maker Salford, Bedfordshire,

Sheba Goodhall Daughter Single Female 9 1842 Lacemaker Wavendon, Buckingham

Jane Goodhall Daughter Single Female 3 1848 Schollar Wavendon, Buckingham

GOODHALL, CAROLINE (no mother;s maiden name listed)
GRO Reference: 1844 D Quarter in NEWPORT PAGNEL UNION Volume 06 Page 367

I see a baptism for Caroline, but not for Sarah?

But there is this possible child Sarah, in the union workhouse

Susanna's mother was Mary, as posted earlier.

Possibly Caroline was a half-sister, from an earlier marriage of Joseph ??

ADDED:

Well, no, not an earlier marriage. Joseph married Paulina in 1824:

Pauline Cooke
in the England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973
Name: Pauline Cooke
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 30 Nov 1824
Marriage Place: Salford, Bedford, England
Spouse: Joseph Goodall

Reference ID: item 2 p 34

So Susanna and Caroline are children of two different Josephs.

Clive Report 12 Jul 2019 19:24

Hi,

I have now received the death certificate for Susanna Murden in Wavendon in 1875
It says that she was the widow of Samuel Murden , a private soldier in the 45th regiment.Present at her death was Caroline Jennings (sister).

I am assuming this is the same Susanna:

Murden Or Goodall Susanna 1829 — 1875
Buckinghamshire Burial Index
Wavendon, Buckinghamshire, England

I can see children with the Jennings surname and Goodall as mothers maiden name being born in Derby in the 1840's/50's but nothing from Wavendon.

Could this still be the same Susanna that married George Goodall in 1846?

Thanks AustinQ,

The birth dates do seem to vary a lot. It is going to be very hard to prove which one he is....

You are also right about the timber merchants. I think they are the Goodalls that are mentioned in the following:

http://www.mkheritage.org.uk/wsc/pubs-inns/royal-oak-aspley-heath/

The locality suggests that they may have been related to my Goodalls somehow but not in the immediate family.

AustinQ Report 9 Jul 2019 07:45

Hello Clive, I think the 1819 baptism is correct but the prison records (for sheep stealing) list George as born 1825- so not too far out from the census records I posted.

AG- the George christened in Dec 1833 died in 1836, so the census I posted are not for that George:

Burial:
First name(s) George
Last name Goodall
Age 2
Birth year 1834
Burial date 24 Jan 1836
Place Wavendon
Denomination Anglican
Residence Wavendon
Relative's relationship Son of
Relative's name Willam & Sarah Goodall
County Buckinghamshire
Document type Bishop's transcripts
---------------------------

The timber merchant mentioned in several articles is not your George- this is him in 1871:

1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Duke Street, Aspley Guise, Woburn, Bedfordshire, England

George Goodall Head Male 27 1844 Timber Merchant Woburn Sands, Bedfordshire
Annie Goodall Wife - Female 26 1845 - Bedfordshire,
William Goodall Son - Male 7 1864 - Buckinghamshire,
Eliza Goodall Daughter - Female 6 1865 - Buckinghamshire,
----------------------------

The George Goodhall convicted of stealing a lock in 1863 is also not the correct George- he was recorded as born 1831 with no previous convictions:

Clive Report 8 Jul 2019 23:00

Hi, Yes, "our" George Goodall is most likely this one:

Name: George Goodall
Christening Date: 29 Aug 1819
Christening Date (Original): 29 AUG 1819
Christening Place: WAVENDON,BUCKINGHAM,ENGLAND
Father's Name: John Goodall
Mother's Name: Sarah

His marriage certificate to Susanna Goodall in 1846 gives his age as 27 and his Father as John Goodall (Labourer).

The Brighton George does seem to be a bit younger.

There are quite a lot of George Goodall/Goodhalls out there and it seems more than one from Wavendon...

I have found an article in the Northampton Mercury from Jan 1863 that a George Goodhall was committed to Bedford Gaol for 3 months for stealing a lock value 10s at Luton. This could be him given his previous form.

In a Feb 1869 article, George Goodhall, Timber Dealer of Woburn Sands was cleared of punching a Wm Griffin who was fighting Goodhall's brother.

The Timber Dealer bit may be a clue. The London Gazzette lists a John Goodall and Frederick Goodall of Woburn Sands in the Parish of wavendon trading as J & F Goodall Timber Merchants in 1891 and an article in 1870 where a John Goodhall, timber dealer from Aspley Guise (adjoins Woburn Sands/Wavendon) is sued for money owed for carting timber. This might be the link between the Goodalls of Wavendon and the Colocott family, Wheelwrights in Southwark. They had a coach wheel making factory (presumably made from wood). George and Susanna's daughter Caroline married James Colocott.

In May 1872, there is a George Goodhall mentioned as a witness in a Foot & Mouth disease case in Woburn mentioned in the Luton Herald & Dunstable Times. Also possible.

Not sure if any of these are the right George but are likely to be related somehow I think. Any help in trying to untangle all this is much appreciated!

What is the Buckinghamshire Burial Index? Is this off a gravestone or church records?

Any idea which church she would be buried at?

I will probably order the death certificate for the Susanna Murden who died in 1875 to see if that gives any more clues. This would presumably just give her surname at death though.

The original 1911 is a little messy- originally it had just Buckinghamshire and Wales for place of birth but it looks like Chesham and Swansea have been added. Looking at previous census Jane was actually born Anglesey, so it's possible that Chesham is wrong too.
