Yes thats him on the 1851 census. Seems fairly consistant from the census's that John Jones was born 1794.

The twins Abram and Isaac born 1843, Williams name is mis transcribed.

Is this John in the 1851 Census???

1851 Census

John Jones
Age: 57
Estimated birth year: abt 1794
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Elizabeth Jones
Gender: Male
Where born: Llancynfelyn, Cardiganshire, Wales
Civil Parish or Township: Llancynfelin
Ecclesiastical parish: Geneur Glyn
County/Island: Cardiganshire
Country: Wales
Registration district: Aberystwyth
Sub-registration district: Geneur
ED, institution, or vessel: 7a
Piece: 2486
Folio: 154
Page Number: 3
Household schedule number: 12

John Jones 57 Hatter
Elizabeth Jones 54 b,ca 1797, Llancynfelyn
Margaret Jones 16
William Jones 7
Isaac Jones 7

They were married in 1815 in Denio, Caernavonshire ................. so John would have been about 21, while Elizabeth would have been about 18.

In this case, then, permission of Elizabeth;s parents at least would have been required.

It would still be good to find baptisms to find their exact ages.

Deborah ..............

how old is John on the 1841 Census, remembering that ages on that census were rounded DOWN to the nearest 5?

I should also say that the 1841 Census does NOT give the birth place of anyone, it just shows where they live and whether they were born in that county or nor by "Y" or "N", in Scotland by "S", o in Ireland by "I".

Kath .............. thanks for correcting my mistake!!

I wondered about the with the "consent of parents" ..............

I've usually assumed that means one or both was under the age of consent.

However, I've had a couple of marriages recently when both were most definitely over the age of consent. We had a discussion about this recently on another site that I am on as it seems 2 or 3 other people had found the same thing. We all had other evidence to prove that both parties were over the age of 21.

We came to the conclusion that some Vicars put with the "consent of parents" to make doubly sure that the marriage was legal!

I've now come to the conclusion that seeing "with consent of parents" can no longer let me assume that one or both parties are under age! That means ideally searching for baptism records, although finding them on 1 or more censuses 1851 or later would also help.

Thats an interesting site, thank you, the birth entry earlier shows child is female, I wonder if being the first born they wanted to call it John after the father but as she was female they called her Jonette.

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 23 Jun 2019 12:15

Jonette is a genuine name, as a diminutive for John. I found this site, which might come in useful for other unusual names!

Sorry Sylvia, but the marriage of John and Elizabeth is the top one of three on the right hand side of the page.

One or both of them must have been under 21 at the time as the marriage was with the consent of parents.

Thank you very much for all that, I appreciate you taking time to look for me.

You can also see the transcript and image of John and Elizabeth's marriage on FindMyPast ....... go to A-Z records, then search for the county (you don't have to type in the full name)

The image is there, and John and Elizabeth's entry is the bottom one of 3 on the right hand page ............. this presumably is why your copy does not have the parish name showing.

There is no mention of John's occupation, nor of fathers ............ just as said above.

The second witness was indeed Robert Roberts

You can view the image of the Parish Register for Jonett's baptism on FindMyPast. The transcript was posted above without attribution

It is very clearly JOnett ........ very clear handwriting!!

John's occupation is shown as Hatter.

May I suggest that you take JOnett with a pinch of salt until/unless you can actually see the Parish Register entry for yourself.

JEnett was a relatively common name in those days, and I'm seriously wondering whether the handwriting in the Register is bad or hard to decipher so that every transcriber is seeing the "e" as an "o".

OH has the name in one of his ancestral lines from the 16th to the early 18th centuries, and there are various spelling ...... Jenet/Jenett/Jennet? etc

oops, sorry ............... I didn't take in that safc had posted this

SylviaInCanada

Deborah ...............

those early records usually show no more than the marital status of the groom and bride (ie, Bachelor/Spinster vs Widower/Widow).

It's very unusual to see occupation on the marriage and even rarer to see it on the Banns ............. at least, that is my experience.

It is a bit more common to see the father's occupation on a baptism, but then often the mother's name is omitted!

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 22:08

The first of the 11 children I found was an Elizabeth born 1819.

Deborah

Deborah Report 21 Jun 2019 21:53

Thank you safc, fortunately a hatter is a rare occupation, which helps. I thought I had all their children but didn't have this one.

Also Jonett is a rare name, I googled it, nothing came up, almost a combination of John and Elizabeth.
