Durham mining museum has the list of disasters in mines & names of dead or witnesses which Dea refers to - no Patrick though.

An active member on ancestry has added a correction on the place of birth on the 1871 census - it may be worth contacting him, I can try if you haven't an ancestry sub?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I now have a baptism for 'a' James who fits the one above and he was baptised in Tuam:

Name: James O'Neil
Baptism Age: 0
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 1853
Baptism Date: 20 Nov 1853
Baptism Place: Tuam, Galway, Ireland
Diocese: Tuam
Father: Patrick O'Neil
Mother: Mar(y) Mullone
Sp. ? Bridget Burke

I think we may be on to something here - we need to find a marriage for Patrick O'Neil to Mary Mullone and a son 'Patrick' for them to fit this all together........... Do you have anything in your notes to help?

Also, I note that we have seen the name 'Burke' as in 'Bridget Burke' at James' baptism before - do you have a note of Bridget anywhere?

Re Bridget Cope 1891 Census....

Bridget Cope was previously married to an Elijah Barlow (16th March 1856) They married in Sheldon Stoke on Trent. He was the son of William Barlow and she the daughter of John McDermott....both lived Castle St.
Elijah died in 1866...

Bridget McDermott Barlow married John Cope (son of James Cope) 1866 in Hanley.

Can you see a marriage for Patrick O'Neil Snr. and Mary Mullone anywhere please?

Dea that's amazing. It says they searched the cart. Patrick O'Neill was a hawker/rag dealer so he would have a cart.
Wonder how he could afford to have someone defending him.
I think this is our Patrick

Thank you

The other James O'Neill that you found who married Margaret Waters is he no longer in the running as a brother of Patrick ?

Linda x

Dea

Dea Report 20 May 2019 21:38

The one who married Margaret Waters was too old (born c 1813) to be 'our' Patrick's brother but he could possibly have been his uncle i.e. a brother of the father Patrick ??

Will take a further proper look tomorrow............
