Wow! I'm sorry I didn't reply yesterday but I have been really busy decorating following a rather long loft conversion we've been enduring. I cannot believe how generous you fellow researchers are to take the time to help me with this post. Having looked at the various posts I can say that it looks a bit of a minefield. I have no evidence that Helen was American but saw the reference on Ancestry in my initial post and thought it worth asking for help just to see what it contained. I don't believe that this is the right Helen. Regrettably, Rachael is no longer with us I'm afraid but her daughter has been trying for some time to discover more about her birth and family members. I am trying to help her. Rachael told her daughter that she believed her mother Helen was very young when she gave birth to her, possibly only 17. Hence my guess at her birth as 1929. She also thought that her mother may have been either Polish or German. The only other information we have, from Rachael's birth certificate, is that Helen worked as a domestic servant at the Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital in Golden Square, London, W.C. I have not yet investigated whether any staff records exist of this establishment. I need to study the posts submitted by you kind folks in a little more detail, but if anything else comes to light, please let me know. Thank you all once again.

You can use these links to search the main US census
1850 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1401638 1860 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1473181 1870 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1438024 1880 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1417683 1890 1900 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1325221 1910 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1727033 1920 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1488411 1930 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1810731 1940 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2000219
There is a 72 year closure. The census does go back yo 1790, but pre-1850, only the head of h/h was named, and the rest of the h/h just shows up as counts in age-sex categories. Also, 1890 was 99.99% destriyed by fire. Some states did their own censuses, often 5 y after the federal census.

As a child in 1950 Wembley, one of our neighbours was a US civilian employee working at a big USAF base nearby in Ruislip. He was rhere with his wife and kids (who I think were born in the UK). I don't know his route there - if he and his wife went first to France or Italy say, that wouldn't show up in UK inbound passenger lists. He could have demobbed in Europe, and have his wife come over to join him, - I just don't know.
