Can anyone succeed where I have so far failed, in tracing Thomas Luty after his appearance on the 1871 census, or finding what happened his wife Jane (nee Burrows)? Thomas was baptised at Long Bennington Lincolnshire 8 Mar 1829 (baptism reg entry). He married Jane Burrows @ Long Bennington 10 Dec 1855 (marriage reg entry). She was also bapt Long Bennington 3 Jan 1836. The couple are together on the 1861 census in Long Bennington with son William born 1860. There is also the bapt & burial of a daughter - Jane Elizabeth in 1866 in the parish registers. However by the 1871 census Thomas & William are residing with his widowed mother Elizabeth, married sister Elizabeth & her daughter Ann are also listed with them in Long Bennington. Thomas is shown as married rather than widower. I can find no trace of him after this. I have traced his son William through to his death. I did find a potential "Ellis Island" entry in 1887, but on viewing the scan, the age has I believe been wrongly transcribed as 60, giving a birth year of 1827, but should be 40. There is also a wife Martha listed aged 38 which doesn't seem to tie in. I haven't been able to establish what happened to Jane after 1866. |

Looks like this is indeed Jane - Thomas Luty aged 12 GRO entry shows mothers maiden name Burrows. There's a death regn @ Newark 1885 for Thomas Luty born 1868 tat seems to tie in. |

What you are assuming is an 1868 Luty/Burrows marriage is the birth record for young Thomas Luty. |

Thanks for the extra info, looks like the couple split some time after Thomas was conceived. . |

I'm afraid I can't see any sign of your Thomas anywhere after 1871. |

Not helping with your query, but there was also another daughter who sadly died as an infant. |

Thanks for your efforts ArgyllGran,. It appears Jane may have been a bit of a lass, having looked at the 1871 census she was living with a George Adcock, with no relationship to him as head of the household shown. If the marriage Jane Watson/William Booth is her, (I'd lay good odds it is) she's either married very quickly after William Watson's death, or had already split with him. Unfortunately the transcript for the marriage from the church marriage register on FMP doesn't show martial status or fathers names, need to get sight of a cert. or fiche of the register. I can only assume Thomas went abroad, or his name is so badly transcribed on census data that he's well hidden and/or his death regn is mis-transcribed - unless someone else can manage to track him down. |

Think this is Jane's second marriage. |

Thanks alviegal, either she was a naughty girl, or Thomas Luty died between the 1871 census and her marriage in 1873 allowing the couple to wed legally. Another marriage cert or register fiche to view I think. |

Just to round things up with Jane Burrows, I have now traced her on all the census data after her first marriage and the following seems to be her story. Having married Thomas Luty in 1855, the couple separated around 1868. In 1871 she resided with George Allcock in Newark. She married him at the register office on 15 May 1873. However, he died suddenly on 2 Jan 1877. She then married William Watson in late 1880. They are together on the 1881 census. William died in 1886. On the 1891 census she has William Booth residing with her as a "lodger", they married 26 Jan 1896. Jane died in 1907, William died in 1910. First husband Thomas Luty is still a mystery, but it seems likely that he died sometime between the 1871 census and Jane's marriage to George Allcock in May 1873, I haven't managed to find a death regn & there is no burial in his home parish of Long Bennington. The fact that the marriage to George was reported in the Lincolnshire press would I think have alerted someone who knew her to a bigamous marriage, had that been the case. |
