Hi
I am trying to find out when Winifred kate Appleby born abt 1878 died 1919.
Entered a work house in Bristol where she died.

She may of used her maiden name as she declared she was not married at the time I believe so her husband would not have to pay.
If any one can help

If you want to be any more specific about the date of death than Quarter 3 1919, you would need to get the death certificate. Unless you can find out if the workhouse records are available in the local Records Office or similar. You might be lucky to find her record.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Bristol/

Note - Many repositories impose a closure period of 100 years for records Identifying individuals.

Bristol workhouse records were virtually all destroyed by enemy action in 1940

This has been really helpful thank you

Don't forget that even in 1919 the workhouse had an infirmary that was free and open to the local citizens.

1919 was also the time when Spanish Flu was raging in the UK.

If you buy that death certificate you will find the death date and cause of death, which might answer your questions

You can get a pdf of the certificate by email from GRO, for £6 until ca Feb 16, then price is going up.

She might indeed have said that she was a spinster so that her husband would not have to pay, OR he might have had to keep her at home if it was indeed the Spanish Flu.

I do know that Winifred had curvature of the spine so the infirmary would make sense.
Walter Appleby I know would not of kept her at home as he was then with an Ida Capps.
What this has answered is he didn’t put her in the workhouse..
What is interesting is that Winifred is down as my Grandfather s Mother Reginald’ Charles Appleby born 1906 in St Pancras but Winifred we think was in Bristol!
Was it common place back then to lie?
He married Ida Capps after Winifred died.i do have a photo of Charles and Ida taken around 1912.
I guess I will never know

the st Pancras birth as this is the GRO record showing mothers maiden name was wride

APPLEBY, REGINALD CHARLES WRIDE
GRO Reference: 1906 J Quarter in ST.PANCRAS Volume 01B Page 28 Order

So maybe they had parted by then and she went to London for some reason

She was a teacher so maybe she got a teaching post

This was the shocker when I got a copy of Reginald’s birth certificate.
As we thought Ida Capps was his mother and we did question Winifred giving birth with her spine.
It’s something I will never find the answer to.
As Walter was paid so the story goes to leave the family and he never had contact with them again. I did find him on a ship to New York but neither Winifred and Ida were on it. Walter didn’t stay too long as I found him on a return ship and then he went to Bristol.
What has been amazing is I have found descendants of Walters brother on this site.

What address does it give for her on the cert
Is she stil a teacher on it

she won't show on any electoral rolls then as woman hadn't got the vote at that time

23 Clarence Rd St Pancras.
Ida Capps was born abt 1879..
I wonder if there’s any census she’s on around 1905-1907. She didn’t marry Walter until she was 40 but I have a photo of her and Reginald taken around 1912
My dad has just sent me a copy of Winifred’s death certificate and she claimed she was a widow which wasn’t true as Walter was alive, but I believe back then he would of had to pay as they were married

Quite interesting that 1911 census - here it is from FMP

Reginald's relationship to Walter is overwritten as son - but can't make out what the original said.

Someone has been very precise writing in the places of birth - see below

?(Wt) Appleby written above London, England on Reginald'splace of birth Line
then below that -

Greyghost, I think the original for the relationship for Reginald on that 1911 census said "child" and was changed to "son".
