It makes it more likely then that Edwin could be Edward. Only the certificate will tell.

Re the 1871. Can someone check the image again please? (We’re about to go out) From from memory, was one of the household members a hairdresser?
It’s possible that Edward was Edwin, but where did the J from the title/OP come from?

It is possible though I admit odd. Edward’s son Victor married a Mary Agnes McDonald O’Brien. Mary’s father Joseph was a hammerman and her brother also Joseph was a riveter and both worked at the shipyard.

re the 1871 census found by +++DetEcTive+++ Could Edwin be the elusive Edward? Occupation is hard to make out but looks like boatmaker? Surely not?

Thank you both. That is the family in the 1881 and 1891 census. I’ll order that birth certificate to confirm but it looks promising.

I am struggling to find to find Edward J Evans on the 1871 census and wondered if anyone else could?
I am still trying to pin down his birth but according to the 1881 and 1891 census his birth would be around 1852/53 and he gives his place of birth on one census as London/Middlesex.
Thanks to the fact that he and his wife Ellen/Helen Maskell 1851/52 had all their children in Scotland I can give their exact marriage date as August 3rd 1873, Kensington, London. All children’s birth certificates from then have their parents marriage date included.
On the 1881 census Edward has brother Arthur L. Evans who is 16 living with him. Edward is a Hairdresser/Barber on every census I’ve found him on.
