I am looking at a DNA match I have with a Forster and am trying to find a common ancestor . Holgate is a surname we share and its in the right place . Kent /Essex. On this occasion I am not working from the known to the unknown.

It may well be that he is - but you need to do a lot of research to prove it.

wouldn't it be a laugh of your Holgate's were the same as the Archbishop (of York) Holgate who founded Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School in York..affectionately known as "Archie's"by its students including me....many many moons ago.....
If ever you get back far enough you might well find Archbishop ROBERT HOLGATE and his wife BARBARA WENTWORTH early 1500's were ancestors..its not that common a name

Trees on Ancestry show your Henry's parents as John Holgate (1833-1907) & Emma Ives and John's parents as John Holgate (1810-1872) & Mary J. Wright but that's as far back as hey go.
I still don't understand how you got back to Thomas born 1737.
