As said previously, either of Joseph's marriage certificates which you would need to buy*, should give his Father's name and occupation - hopefully it will say William an Ag. Lab, in which case the records on this thread re his parents would look to be correct.

Where have you been searching so far, Peter?

The records I've posted are from Ancestry (subscription site).
Family Search (free) is also pretty good for older records - so long as you take your info from actual records, and not from other people's trees.

But records only go so far back , and the further back you go, the patchier is the coverage, and the less info there is on the records, to help distinguish one William Stanley (for example) from another. Eventually you reach a dead end and can't go any further.

If I've got the correct William above (1797), his parents were John and Martha.
However, I don't see any marriage record - which doesn't mean they weren't married, but just that there's probably no surviving record.

My initial search when I first started showed father (KEnneth Barry) and grandfather (Reginald John) and when I clicked on grandfather his father (John) was shown plus his grandfather (Joseph). All of my family were from Finedon, Wellingborough area. John is shown as having siblings Thomas,Harry and Albert so 1881 census details would appear to be correct.
I am really grateful for the help you people are giving me but, being completely new to this, I wonder whether I need to be looking elsewhere for the information you guys seem to be getting. How do I broaden my search for say joseph’s or william’s ancestors?

AG - looks a better marriage match for William and Elizabeth, especially as there is an Elizabeth Muns in the 1841 household posted earlier.

Just possibly the parents of the Joseph Standley baptised 1816 ???

Peter, you say that the 1881 census details "appear to fit other relatives" - in what way?

Can you please give all the details you have on Joseph and say what takes you back to c 1815 Wellingborough area.

One of his children was your great grandfather, one of his your grandfather etc., how have you got back to him?

Presume you have census details and proven marriages / births etc?

Either of his marriage certificates should show his Father's name and occupation.

Peter, as already said, you will only find out his parents' names if you can find a record of his baptism, naming his parents.
Many such old parish records are no longer in existence. There may be no record to find.
At 15:55 I posted the baptism of a Joseph Standley in Finedon in 1816.
This may or may not be the right one.
Remember that spelling of names wasn't standardised, and often depended on how the person writing it thought it sounded.
