Find Ancestors

I am trying to track down the link to the Isle of Skye (my father has told me his ancestors came from Skye). I have Peter's marriage certificate on 27 Dec 1879 to Margaret Elizabeth Mitchell in Phillack, Cornwall. His occupation is given as Mariner and he says that he is 28 years old. His father, John McKinnon is listed as an Engineer. I would like to know:

a/ where and when Peter was born

b/ where his family lived. I know for a fact that they hail from Skye at some point but John is of course a very common name and I can't find one that links convincingly to Peter.

Forgot to add that Peter and Mary had a daughter, Martha Louisa McKinnon born in Hayle, Cornwall in 1878/9. Sadly, it appears that Peter died some time between 1880 and 1887 as in December 1887 I also have the marriage certificate for Mary Eliabeth McKinnon's second marriage to a George Hall, where she is listed as a widow. Any details of what happened to Peter (although I appreciate that as a sailor he may have been buried at sea) would be appreciated too.

Where are his wife and child in 1881?

Also should say that Martha Louisa McKinnon is my great grandmother.

Yes, I have tried that but can find no record of him (perhaps he was away at sea, I don't know). I've tried both the Scotland and England Censuses for 1881. Thank you.

Not sure you need to worry too much about Mckinnons, as Martha probably wasn't Peter's child

Is this the family in Phillick/Phillack, Cornwall in 1881? Mary E. is listed as married but she's Mitchell same as her mother.

Even if Peter died at sea, his death should be registered - normally at the first port of call thereafter

Peter MacKinnon died after his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Mitchell as she is named as a widow on the certificate of her second marriage to George Hall on 26 December 1887. I have yet to find out when and where Peter died.

Peter's info about his father's occ may be inaccurate.............he wouldn't be the first to try to impress the in-laws

Just because Mary said she was a widow, doesn't necessarily mean that she was one!

Sorry - I had to go out for a while. I will answer the responses in the order they've come in. Erika H - re Martha Louisa's birth certificate. I have ordered one from the Cornwall Records Office so am waiting for that to arrive at present.
