Many thanks to you all.
Agnes Lemon was a mystery, but thanks to you all, especially AQ who first spotted the family in spite of different names, I've learned far more about her than I ever thought I would!

Maybe John. There's an Anderson in the same household, if the transcription is correct:

Thanks, RG.
This could be George & Jessie's marriage:
ANDERSON GEORGE JESSIE BROWN/FR205 (FR205) 15/04/1814 774/ 10 263 Ettrick
I wonder where Agnes & John's son John was in 1841 & 1851 - born 1836, eh should have been with his parents at least in 1841. He does appear in 1861 and later censuses. (Unless Ancestry's transcriptions are at fault, which is highly possible.)
Agnes Cowan in the 1841 Scotland Census Name: Agnes Cowan Age: 25 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1816 Gender: Female Where born: Scotland Civil Parish: Peebles County: Peeblesshire Address: Haystowne Stables Newby Parish Number: 768 Household Members: Name Age John Cowan 25 Agnes Cowan 25 George Cowan 3 Jane F Cowan 2 James Cowan 3 Mo

Thanks, AQ.
Hugh is stated to be deceased, on Samuel's death cert.
On Catherine's death cert, it gives her parents as John Cowan, toll-keeper, deceased, and Agnes Cowan, ms Anderson, deceased. Which explains young Agnes's name.
But it also says "Married to Hugh Lemon, coachman" - not "Widow of . . "
She died at the Lorn Combination Poorhouse, Oban. The informant was the governor of the poorhouse. Maybe he didn't know Hugh had died (if he had!)
Poor Agnes, losing her husband and her mother in the same week - though she wouldn't have know that until late, when she got word from the Army. Catherine died 6th May 1916, and George died 11th May 1916 .

Sorry, was away last night- off to bed but did spot this- I don't have access to newspapers (I think there could also be snippets re Samuel).
Published: Thursday 15 July 1875 Newspaper: Southern Reporter MARRIAGES At High Street, Peebles, on the 6th inst, Hugh Lemon, to Catherine, fourth daughter of the late John Cowan
I have seen Catherine and Kathleen used for the same person in other families.

Ooh! Interesting, RG!
I had wondered about that death for Catherine, just because it's Argyll, but hadn't looked at the image, and stupidly hadn't looked for her as Cowan.
Many thanks for using your credits - but don't worry about sending the image of Samuel's death - I'll have a look myself.
The Duror address certainly proves it's the right family.

Ancestry's version of the 1891 census showing Hugh in Edinburgh, gives his birthplace as Port William, which matches 1881. Ancestry's transcription doesn't say he's a widower, but I haven't looked at the image.
Port William is about 6 or 7 miles from Glasserton, so the 1861 and 1871 census posted will be the right ones
Re 1891 in Edinburgh, though - there's a Hugh Lemon, coachman, on Glasgow ER's 1884-1895
The family AQ found, and we've been following, seems to be the best bet.
It does leave a lot of unanswered questions - can't find births or deaths for either Hugh/Daniel or Catherine/Kathleen, nor any sign of them after 1891.
I can accept that Agnes chopped 10 years off her age, so as not to be older than George (born 1882), but the names Daniel and Kathleen instead of Hugh and Catherine are a stumbling block.
However, I don't suppose we'll find the exact truth! Many thanks for all your help.
