My Great Aunt Alice was 33 when she, and William, came over to Canada in June 1911 on the ship ‘Royal George’ and she was never heard of again (by me anyway :-D). My question is what happened to her?? Actually I just fibbed I do know they were living in Toronto in 1921 and again in 1947. Did they have children, when did they die?
Facts:
Alice Ball born 1877 Exeter
William Edwin Brown born 1877 Exeter
Alice married William – Dec 1898 in Exeter, Devon

Will I'm sleeping and doing over things you all are working hard :-D THANK YOU.

What exactly is a orange fitter? What do you fit on a orange? :-)

Although it ends in ge, I don't think its an 'Orange' Fitter. The handwriting is awful; you can't even make out the industry!

Dea

Dea Report 29 Sep 2018 07:52

It looks like 'Garage fitter' to me ?

Dea x

Dea

Dea Report 29 Sep 2018 08:43

NOW I have it !!!

It is neither an Orange fitter or indeed a Garage fitter but a BRONZE fitter !"!!!

You may note that the enumerator has added a code for the occupation on the census page and this is '61-96'. When consulting the list of codes for the 1921 census you come up with:

1921 Census Occupational Codes
Division
Class
Code
Professions

Manufacturing
Non-Ferrous Metal Industries - Brass and Copper Manufacturing
61-77
Solderers

Manufacturing
Non-Ferrous Metal Industries - Brass and Copper Manufacturing
61-79
Tinsmiths and coppersmiths apprentices

Manufacturing
Non-Ferrous Metal Industries - Brass and Copper Manufacturing
61-80
Winders, reelers and spoolers

Manufacturing
Non-Ferrous Metal Industries - Brass and Copper Manufacturing
61-96
Semi-skilled operatives (not elsewhere
classified) *********

Manufacturing
Non-Ferrous Metal Industries - Brass and Copper Manufacturing
61-99
Labourers

Armed with this info, I now believe that the first word of his occupation is 'bronze' which is a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper.

Also, I think the type of work column no.31 part 'could' say 'Ornamental work' - the word 'work being written above the 'ornamental' bit.

I had at first thought that there was a b or a t in the middle of the first word but if you look closely the long stroke we can see is actually a part of the enumerators initials written on top of it.

Just to mention - it is posted above that Alice travelled to Canada on her own in 1911 - I presume that you are now aware that she actually travelled over accompanied by her niece Ethel Bessie Bartlett who was with them on 1911 census.
