Bridget Report 30 Aug 2018 16:56

I am still trying to find information on my grandmother.
My grandfather, Jesse Louis Bush born on 23 November 1883, in Birling, Maidstone, Kent immigrated to South Africa early 1900s where he met and married Bridget Veronica Crackett born 1887 I believe her maiden name was Jackson. My grandmother's first husband was Thomas Crackett.. They had two daughters Sarah Jane Born 17 July 1909 and Nellie born 3 November 1910. The two daughters were baptised at the Parish of St Mary's of Jeppestown,Johannesburg. The witnesses at Sarah Jane's baptism, 8 August 1909, were Walter Ashton, Jane Scott and Isabel Crackett and at Nellie's baptism, 11 December 1910 were Agnes Williams and William S Walker. My Grandmother died (8 December 1929) and was buried in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. I do not have a date for the marriage between her and my grandfather. so I presumed it must have been before 1920. They had two sons, Alfred Bush born 1920 in Johannesburg and my father Harry Thomas Bush born 3 May 1922 in Cape Town. We have so little information for the time between her marriage to my grandfather and her death. On my Uncle's, Alfred Bush, birth certificate his mothers maiden name is recorded as Jackson and my father's, Harry Thomas Bush, it is recorded as Cosgrove. The maiden name on here death certificate is Crackett. I can only presume that she might have been married twice before she married my grandfather. I would appreciate all the help I can get with this matter. Thank you very much

Thanks a million Kath. I have seen this info before but never persued it because the ship left Southhampton in 1912, however, Bridget and her husband, Thomas, were in South Africa in 1909 attending Sarah Jane's Baptism. I have the Baptism document.
Thank you very much for your kind help.

On the image of his marriage to another wife in 1936, Jesse is described as a BACHELOR, a gauger, born Ireland. So maybe he was never married to Bridget Veronica?

Event Type Marriage
Event Date 03 Oct 1936
Event Place East London, East London, Cape, South Africa
Age 54
Birth Year (Estimated) 1882

EDIT: I have pmed the image of the marriage register.

If the passenger list that Kathleen posted is correct, which i believe it is, the only infant Miss T Crackett I cound find is this one, who adds yet another MMN to the mix.

Births Mar 1912 Crackett Thomasina Campbell Morpeth 10b 921

EDIT: Was she named Thomasina after her father Thomas?

So is her mother nee Bridget Veronica Campbell?

I suspect that Miss E Crackett could be known as Ellen/Ellie/Nellie.

I was posting the South Africa baptisms for the benefit of helpers on the thread.

Bridget Report 30 Aug 2018 18:44

I also believe the info is correct but as I said to Kathleen my only problem is if she was in SA for her daughters baptism in 1909 & 1910 then she was already in SA when the ship left Southhampton. My mother said she was from the Free State in SA.
My grandmother is a conundrum.

There's nothing to stop Bridget having travelled to England between 1910 and 1912, and maybe waiting a couple of months after the birth of the third child Miss T Crackett an Infant, before travelling back.

Just a pity Birth Certs aren't cheaper to buy - or it would be worth checking that one out.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 30 Aug 2018 18:55

Could she have been in England visiting relatives (or some other reason) and then gone back in 1912?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Aug 2018 18:56

There were almost seventeen months between Nellie's baptism and the 1912 voyage.
Plenty of time to have come to the UK and given birth to Miss T.

(Oops - already said by Kucinta.)

Check out the image of this one on Ancestry Incoming passengers if you can. Although it says T, it also says wife against it.

Name: T Crackett
Port of Departure: Delagoa Bay, Mozambique
Arrival date: 2 Aug 1911<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Port of Arrival: London, England
Ports of Voyage: Delagoa Bay; Durban [Natal]; Cape Town; St Helena and Las Palmas
Ship Name: Avondale Castle
Shipping line: Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company Ltd
Official Number: 108160

She is accompanied by two female children, one an infant initial could be H, N at a big stretch, other female child initial J. in column for children aged between 1 and 12. Bears looking at if you can as my eyesight is poor. Maybe she was even Mrs T (for Thomas) Crackett?

It might be her arrival in the Uk long after the baptisms In South Africa previously mentioned, and also after the 1911 census.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Aug 2018 19:06

Yes, I think that's them, Kucinta.

The children's initials are S and H (Helen / Nellie ?)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Aug 2018 19:08

There's no Crackett/ Campbell marriage in England/Wales 1870-1912 - if that fact supports the possibility that Thomasina is Miss T.

EDIT:

But maybe this is Thomasina's marriage? In which case not Bridget's daughter?

Thomassion Crackett
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005
Name: Thomassion Crackett
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1928

On the passenger list, under the heading "country of last permanent residence" there is a tick under "British Possessions". South Africa would be one of these, so she was probably only in England temporarily.

I'd be tempted to get the birth cert for Thomasina, especially as she has a different mother's maiden name (Campbell) to the one you believe (Jackson) or do you have evidence in the way of the marriage registration to Thomas Crackett?

You could order a PDF of the birth cert from the GRO site for £6 at the moment.

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Or maybe not....in view of the marriage Argyll Gran found. Hmmm.....

Can anyone find Thomasina Crackett c1912 on the 1939 register? Though even if she is on, she might still be a closed record.

EDIT: I see Argyllgran has found her. and ruled her out as the Thomasina born 1911/12

Births Mar 1912 Crackett Thomasina Campbell Morpeth 10b 921

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Aug 2018 19:13

See Thomasina's marriage I posted above.
In Morpeth where she was born.

And in 1939 she and her husband and daughter are living just along the road from a family of Cracketts (in Northumberland).

I don't think this is Bridget's daughter.

EDIT:

No, maybe I take that back!

In 1939 Thomasina's birth is given as 7 Nov 1905.
