So, he died in Brentwood as opposed to being born there. |

Yes, it is important to purchase certificates. This is the only way to prove a relationship within a family. It certainly saves time in researching although seems costly, it is the only way to go. |

The tree on Ancestry suggests sometime after his second marriage in 1961 to Queenie Mabel Kitchin (sister of Alice), he travelled to Australia. They give this as his grave: |

You indicated you know the name of his children. If that's the case then it should fairly easy to tell if your Joseph was the man born in 1918 and died in Australia. |

I think you need to buy those marriage certificates to see who he names as his father. If it was the same man who married both Alice and Queenie, it is possible that he knocked a few years off his age as he was almost 20 years older than Queenie. |

I wouldn't get the birth certificate until you see the marriage certificate as that should point you, hopefully, in the right direction for the birth certificate. No point spending more than you need to. :-) |

I'm not certain on that Arthur Mason/ Olive Grainger marriage- there are several possible Mason/ Grainger marriages. |

I had been following this one - Walter Wright Mason m Mary Ann Grainger - they 'did' have a Joseph Wright Mason but he was probably the one born in 1918: |
