The images state relationship to head of household as Dau(squiggle). We can only assume that the transcriber disengaged brain to think that 8 & 5 yr olds could be divorced! |

Thank you ErikaH for your findings of the Russell children albeit no marriage recorded for parents. By the way regarding the divorce mentioned on post for daughter Mary age 9, I was on Family Search and see where it was coming from because for her marital state it does say divorced on the 1851 census .Would that have been submitted by the person who was transcribing it to Family Search. |

Interesting that the births of Charlotte and Mary (Bapt 1844) do not appear to have been registered, whereas the later ones were, although they all pre-date the introduction of penalties (1875) |

Rereading other posts I see that SAFC did find a baptism for a Mary 1844 Longfield but states father John Russell and mother Susan Saunders, perhaps it's a John Thomas Russel rather than Thomas. |

Erika Many thanks for the info you have found . I have managed to verify on Grobmd that mother is Saunders, what is baffling me is not finding a marriage and I can't find anything about Mary daug listed on 1851 census as to who her mother was. I wonder if Thomas had a previous marriage so Marys mothers name was different from rest of children. Susan seems to be known as Susannah mostly which tends to throw things. |

I can't help thinking that the fact that the mother's maiden surname was recorded on the baptism entries indicates the absence of any marriage between her and the father of the children |

ErikaH. Think I have found Thomas Russell in 1841 living with perhaps elder brother Christopher and wife Mary in Sole St Cobham Kent , their name spelt Rufsel. I also found another Thomas Russell b 1776 in 1841 census and a Sophia Russell b 1821 also living in Sole St Cobham so presume this is the father and sister of Thomas and Christopher. Regarding Susan Saunders ,in the 1841 found one living in Chatham Kent which is not far from Hoo , but although a John Saunders was living in the same street with a wife Elizabeth. Susan was living with a Steven Saunders and wife Susan she was 15, just unsure if it is the same Susan Saunders, very confusing because if you see the birth of above Susan Saunders it states father as John and mother Susan.Obviously in the 1841 it doesn't state relationship to head of household. I am completely lost on both Thomas Russell and Susan Saunders as to why cant find a marriage for them either. |

Re looking again ,you have found a christening for a Charlotte and a Mary Russell both on 7th July 1844 in Longfield. Now the John Russell has thrown me, could mother Susan have been married to a John Russell then got divorced and married Thomas Russell a family member. I did find a baptism for a Susan Saunders in 1824 Hoo, now her father was called John, wonder if there is a name mix up there |

Hi SAFC many thanks for the info, regarding the 1851 I hadn't noticed the word divorced against daughter Mary female 8 yrs, does this mean that her father was divorced or perhaps mother. Must say I have never seen this before. So now I am looking for a marriage for perhaps both parents after Mary was born |
