Oliver's WW1 service record is available here: http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B3022-S053 [p 51 of 76 - died 9/7/1969 @ Westminster Hospital, London, Ont p 20 of 76 - Oliver names father as Job]
Each unit - like the 11th field coy Cdn Engineers - kept a war diary when in a theatre of war describing what the unit was doing on a day by day basis. Like all British divisions, the Canadian divisions of the CEF started out with 3 field coys of Engineers - each abt 350 men. Unlike the Brits, the Canadians expanded these 3 coys to 3 battalions abt triple the size, and put these 3 bns under a brigade - the 4th bde for the 4th div. The earlier war diaries are filed under their later titles.
So starting at my LAC bookmark: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/genealogy/Pages/introduction.aspx we can drill down to http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/lac-bac/search/arch_adv Change Any Keyword to Finding Aid and enter 9-52, then in the 2nd keyword box enter 11th Battalion, Canadian Engineers or else 4th Brigade, Canadian Engineers (or else Chief Engineer). Finally, show 50 hits per page.
Maybe the last is a personal foible, but continually clicking to turn over pages bugs me - so I also click on the button at top of FS searches that gives me 75 hits rather than the default 20- similarly, I have Ancestry show me 50 hits.
Back to the war diaries - locate the set you want, then click on view all images, then at the bottom of the display click view more, and repeat with view more till they all show. Now click on the first thumbnail image to get the real image - right-click on this to Save As - take the defaullt name, but put the 1st image in a new folder that you name 11th Bn Cdn Engineers or whatever (this is so as not to clutter up your downloads file). NB remember to back out of this folder when you start a fresh batch of downloads. You can now click thru the images, downloading as you go you shouldn't have much bother doing 200 images per hour if you don't pause to read them. Two quirks - the paging wraps around the displayed thumbnails, not the full set; and, left clicking off the image (and off the paging arrows) puts me bach at the thumbnail display
As you can see from the first and last image labels mbedded in the URLs below, the first set has 130 labels, but only 109 images. Most of these extra labels are unused - a few have lower quality duplicates.
War diaries - 11th Battalion, Canadian Engineers = 1916/08/01-1917/04/30. File. [109 images] http://data2.archives.ca/e/e050/e001247411.jpg thru http://data2.archives.ca/e/e050/e001247540.jpg
