Yup, I'd been through all the possible Richard Leighton's in the census and none of them really 'fitted'.

I'm just waiting for a reply from the Library about 'Brighton Parade' and will post on here when I hear.

Thank you. :-D

AT LAST - I managed to find Brighton Parade listed in the 1871 census and it seems to be an area of Lodging Houses which would make sense.

The possible hit is Elizabeth Worthing... . The enumerator has squiggled the last part of her surname but it looks as if she and her sister are in fact Worthington's from Manchester.

The Worthington surname and the pob of Manchester is a possible; my family had close relationships with the Worthington family.

However, I can't find her in the 1861 census which would be a big help. Can anyone out there see her, please?

:-)

Re my above post:

Better eyes now see that the surname is in fact WORTHY.

And I've now found her under that name, same occupation, in the 1861 census and her Lodging House is in Talbot Row.

So I'm now going to discount her as having any connections to the family.

Thank you again everyone.

I've got thre final updates on this search:

1. The 'Worthy' surname definitely has no connections to our family. She seems to have just been the 'landlady' of the address in Brighton Parade where my ancestor died Talbot Row was a line of seafront houses just south of Brighton Parade.

2. Blackpool Library replied to me today with a super helpful email and included a screenshot of the OS map of Blackpool from 1890!
" Brighton Parade was a row of 9 buildings on the Promenade just to the north of North Pier and what is now the Metropole Hotel. ... the Directories ... mostly appear to be Boarding Houses, as many buildings on the Promenade were. As most visitors during this period were in Blackpool for reasons of health it is probably reasonable to assume that is why she was here."

3. And then I found a photograph online which shows Blackpool seafront and Brighton Parade is clear as day on it!

RESULT.
