Samuel is the father of Richard in my earlier thread, but I wanted to keep them separate. In 1841 Samuel is shown with wife, Caroline, who I believe is Caroline Dewsbury and they married in 1826, and six children (Walsall, Staffordshire). In 1851 Samuel is shown with wife, Louisa, same children with four added. I thought maybe Caroline died but the only death I can find is in 1841 and I can't find a marriage for Samuel and Louisa. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Louisa Jodebury looks like a strong possibility ... so if that death in 1841 for Caroline is correct, then it looks like some of the children are Louisa's. Thanks.

Samuel referred to Louisa as a spinster in his Will- this is likely as his marriage to her would have been unlawful. Until 1907, the law stated that a man could not marry his deceased wife's sister.

You guys are amazing, I don't know how you find this stuff. I hadn't made the connection between Caroline and Louisa though I did think at the time that the names were similar - Dewsbury and Josebury ... duh. The only death I'd found for Caroline was in 1841 but I guess other spellings of the name make a difference. He did marry Louisa pretty quickly after Caroline's death though.
Thanks.

actually, most men back then remarried fairly quickly after their wives died .......
....... they usually had children that needed looking after.
And who better than a dead wife's sister, who often moved into the house to look after her nieces and nephews. It was convenient, except that it was unlawful.
I must admit that I have ancestors who re-married VERY quickly after the death of a wife, but none of mine married a sister-in-law.

Strange times back then!! I have another question regarding Samuel that I hope someone can help me with. I'm doing this research for a friend who has a tree done years ago by another family member. I've found a few things wrong on some branches and I think there may be another one on the Osborne/Osbourne line. On the old tree Samuel is shown as being born 4 Nov 1799 to parents James and Martha, in West Bromwich. I found the 4th Nov date was actually a baptism, but on the censuses his date of birth show him being born about 1806 but I can't find a birth or baptism around that year. Is the 1799 birth date likely?
Thanks.

This is the baptism you found?
England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Samuel Osborn Gender: Male Baptism Date: 4 Nov 1799 Baptism Place: All Saints,West Bromwich,Stafford,England Father: James Osborn Mother: Martha FHL Film Number: 421617
Is it certain that James and Martha were the names of his parents?????
Samuel Osborne is such a common name that it is tempting to take the first one that you see.
It is possible that he wasn't sure how old he was, but 6-7 years out is a lot!
There is are several Public Family Tree on ancestry that has a baptism date of 25 March 1805, Walsall, parents John Edgar Osborne and Fanny Jane Stanton
England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name Samuel Osborn Gender Male Baptism Date 25 Mar 1805 Baptism Place Saint Matthew,Walsall,Stafford,England Father John Osborn Mother Fanny FHL Film Number 421612
That tree gave me the lead to this marriage, on Ancestry. It IS Osborne on the image, and father is JOHN ..............

from the image ...........
Married after Banns
Samuel Widower, Chain Maker Father:- deceased, Curb Maker
Louisa Spinster Father:- Stirup Maker
Witnesses:- Richard Osborne (his mark) and Anne Aldridge (???spelling)
I think it should be Stirrup Maker for Louisa's father.

Yvonne- that old tree is wrong as we know from Samuel's second marriage to Louisa that his father was John- a curb maker.
This is Samuel's parents in 1841:

Thanks so much. I really had my doubts about that 1799 birth and James and Martha as parents. As you say Sylvia, people do find it tempting to add names just because they fit ... I think that's what's happened in this case. The original tree was done a long time ago and as we know, there's a lot more on-line nowadays. Thanks for confirming that I was right to doubt the original entry.
