Hi.
Curious one this.
James Barrow bapt 12 May 1832 in Westhoughton, Bolton, son of Robert Barrow and Jane Rigby.
1841 census in Westhoughton he is 9 with father and mother both 35 and siblings William 13, Mary 4, Alice 5, Joseph 3 and Robert 1.
1851 census he is living in Abram with siblings Alice 15, Joseph 13, Robert 11 and John 9. Mother remarried (Peter Dootson).
1861 census living in Habergham Eaves and married to Isabella 35. She has a daughter Mary 15 from previous marriage and they have 4 children Joseph 9, Robert 5, Elizabeth 4 and Jane 4.
1871 she is a widow 43 with daughter Mary 25 and HER sons Abel 6 and Thomas 2 plus own childrenas in 1861.
I have ordered a couple of death certs which would tie in with age/place but with no success.
There is a James Barrow death in 1889 (born in 1828) - could he possibly be the same one? Did he go missing or be in a workhouse??
Any help most grateful.
Phil

Well, he seems to have deserted his family around 1862 and in 1866 he spent a fortnight in Prison for doing so:

Just a possibility - no reason to think this is him, rather than some other James Barrow, apart from geography:
James Barrow in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915 Name: James Barrow Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832 Registration Year: 1882 Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep Age at Death: 50 Registration district: Prestwich Inferred County: Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 270

If he changed his name, I have no chance - if he didn't, he doesn't show in the census returns.

Thank you for these death registrations.
DEA - would you be able to do me a big favour? I have seen, by searching, an article in the Wigan Observer and District Advertiser dated 8 October 1881 of a James Barrow being fatally injured in a colliery.
Would you be able to attach the article (if only to rule it out...)?
Phil
Thank you

Had a look Phil but unfortunately the newspaper search result is throwing up the wrong page for me and the article is not on there.
I am trying to read through the rest of the newspaper to see if I can find it so this may take some while.........................

I am afraid it doesn't help us at all as there are no personal details about him. I was trying to find the death registration to check at least for his age but very strangely I couldn't find one registered in or around Hindley ???

I think the 1919 is a strong possibility - the trouble is that so is this one:
Deaths Sep 1898 Barrow James 67 Leigh 8c 171
There are also others which are not to far out to be considered ! :-(
I have a feeling the one in the newspaper article would have been a younger man as he had only within the previous few days started work as a 'drawer' in the Colliery. As far as my limited knowledge goes, this was usually a role filled by a young man or even a boy ?? - This is only a feeling though so cannot be relied upon. I also noted a death registration for a JOHN Barrow in Wigan at the right time and as I could not find one for a James anywhere at all at that time I wondered if either the registration or the newspaper could have made an error ?? - This 'John' was 20 years old which would sound about right ??
Deaths Dec 1881 Barrow John 20 Wigan 8c 49 ?????
