Seeking information on Isabella Young MOODIE between 1861 and 1894. Born 1836 in Auchtertool, Fife to Margaret ROSS then lived in Dunfermline Fife until 1861. Son Peter Ross HERDMAN born 1857. Listed in 1861 census as Isabella HERDMAN, then disappears from Scottish records until 1894 Dunfermline valuation roll listing as Isabella MOODIE or NEGUS. Died 1906 in Dunfermline, listed as widow of Joseph NEGUS.

Yes, that's her. I have a subscription to Scotland's People, but I can't find any record of Isabella there between the 1861 census and the 1894 valuation roll. The site is down at the moment.

Isabella's baptism record lists her as Isabella Ross daughter of Margaret Ross. Her last name is Moodie from there on, presumably her biological father's name.

Margaret married David Herdman in 1837. They are my great-great-grandparents. Margaret died in 1854 and Isabella gave birth to Peter in 1857. David her step-father is Peter's father. When her mother died, she was 17, illiterate and unemployed, living in the same house as her step-father. Frankly, I think he took horrible advantage of her
There's no marriage record that I can find and David's death certificate from 1882 lists him as the widower of Margaret Ross.
Peter shows up in the 1891 census as Peter Herdsman.

I have seen the 1901 census and there's a 1902 death certificate for Peter Negus son of Isabella Moodie and Joseph Negus. It seems likely this is the same Peter but I don't know how to prove/disprove it for certain. Isabella was in contact with her family when she died as the informant on her 1906 death certificate was her nephew George Herdman.

It's the gap between 1861 and 1894 that I'd like to fill. She could have been using a different name or gone over the nearby border into England if she was doing a runner from her step-father. I haven't been able to find her in England so far.

No sign of a marriage to Joseph Negus in Scotland.

You say you don't know if the Peter Negus who died in 1902 is the same person as Peter Herdman.

Peter Negus was 44 when he died, which makes his birth c1858 - so very likely the same Peter.
Also, I don't see any birth of a Peter Negus.

That's from Ancestry. I've tried to check it on SP, thinking I would even use some credits to see what's actually written - but SP doesn't show any of that family in 1841.

This is probably her in 1841 per FamilySearch's transcription - but there's no way to see the whole household at once.
