Best to continue on this thread, Helen, rather than the new one, to save people repeating info already posted here.

It's a shame Helen didn't get back to us.
I could have posted a lot more information regarding the parents and grandparents of Joseph Andrew Dale/Goldsmith.

I would bookmark 3 sites https://www.freebmd.org.uk/
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
The first is the FreeBMD home page - it has links to FreeCEN and FreeREG as well as to the search page for FreeBMD (FreeCEN has a convenient display, but very variable coverage - Noefolk is complete for 1861/71/91)
FreeBND aims to transcribe the printed GRO index which ended with 1983. Transcriptions for the 1980s leave 70% of the quarters incomplete, plus 10 of the earler quarters, viz
Births Jun 1963 (84%) **************** Births Dec 1964 (4%) **************** Births Sep 1978 (44%) **************** Births Dec 1978 (6%) **************** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Mar 1964 (54%) **************** Marriages Dec 1965 (6%) **************** Marriages Dec 1966 (55%) **************** Marriages Sep 1969 (44%) **************** Marriages Dec 1969 (2%) **************** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deaths Mar 1975 (99%) *
[The %-ages are amount transcribed]
To deal with these gaps, and the more recent stuff, we can use collections from the FS site, but it don't find the searching there so nice.
There are short-comings with the printed index - the main ones being no mother's maiden surname on births pre-1911q3, lack of full names (initials get used for mid-names), lack of age at death pre-1866. These are addressed with the new GRO index at the 3rd bookmarked site, which covers births thru 1917 and deaths thru 1957. This site is also the gateway to buying the GRO's copy of BMD certs, and you do have to do a free rego. The drawbacks to the the site are it doesn't address the lack of a spouse's surname for marrs pre-1912, and it's a pain to search. E.g., suppose I'm looking for Fisher-Briggs births for 1871-1901, probably in King;s Lynn (but I'm not sure) I could look for 1921-1951 with one search for Norfolk with FreeBMD, but with the new GRO index, I have to search each sex seperately, and do it in 5-year chunks (1899+-2, 1894+-2, etc.) I would also need to know vol=4b covered the rego county of Norfolk.
So, starting with FreeBMD, we enter the2 surnames Hardy, Goldsmith. We get several possible hits, incl: Marriages Sep 1939 (>99%) Hardy Charles W Goldsmith Kings' L. 4b 1232
Now, click on the page number to see the 4 names on the page, viz:
Marriages Sep 1939 (>99%) Goldsmith Gertrude M Hardy King's L. 4b 1232 Hardy Charles W Goldsmith Kings' L. 4b 1232 plus 2 other names.
Now we search for Hardy-Goldsmith births. We get hits for 1938q4-1951q4, plus 2 later hits in Nottingham which don't look like ours. Note the 1938q4 hit is before the marr, and no page number is given for it, just "see M46". The birth was rego'ed initially in 1939q1 under Goldsmith-Goldsmith. One can click on the page number to see if there's an extra rego under the fathers surname - there's not. (Unwed parents can jointly rego a child, but the father is only named if both the mother and father agree. Initially the couple had to appear together - later relaxed to allow the father to attend any rego office, then later still to allow the father to submit a notarized statement. The mother still had to approve.) Also, one had (and still have) 6 weeks to rego a birth in England/Wales, but the note (see M46) still appears in the actual birth quarter. The birth was later re-rego'ed after the parents wed. Actually, the child is legitimized by the marriage of its parents, provided both were free to marry at the time of birth. The marr legitimizes the child, not the re-rego. I'll not list Leslie's sibs as some will still be alive - all were born in Norfolk, except Les:
Births Jun 1942 (>99%) Hardy Leslie C Goldsmith Manchester 8d 296
One rego's Bs and Ds at the local subdistrict office. These rego's are the ones the informants actually signed. Copies of the events were made at the end of each quarter and, after checking, these copies were sent to the GRO. Completed rego's (500 entries at 5 per page) were deposited at the local superintendents office. One can buy official BMDs from the local office that now holds the rego's (Manchester/Norfolk here). One can also buy official m.certs from the church that held the marr, if it's in their current rego. Some local indexes are online - see https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd In particular, http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1942 Surname Forename(s) Mother's Maiden Name Sub-District Registers At Reference HARDY Leslie C GOLDSMITH Manchester Withington Hospital Manchester WITH/9/91
In 1936, Subdistricts were set up at two Manchester hospitals (Crumpsall was the other one). A local ref usually has 3 parts - a church or subdistricy code, a register sequence number, and a (local) page or entry number - 91 is a page # - marrs usually havean entry number (so one knows who wed whom).

Hi Helen, take the time to slowly work your way through all the information that has been provided for you on here........And hopefully, all will become clear.

Replying generally...
Closed records on the 1939 Register indicates that the named person was born after 1915 & that they had not died in England or Wales before 1992. It was a working document until then & formed the basis of the NHS numbering system. It is slowly being updated where names & dates of birth can be matched with the death indices.
WW2 Service Records are still with the MOD. You can purchase a copy for £30 using the following link. http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html
At some point you’ll probably be advised to purchase birth, marriage or death certificates. Use https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ A paper copy will cost £9.25. For Births: 1837 –1917 & Deaths: 1837 –1957, there is currently a trial where you can buy a PDF version sent via a link for £6.
