Spencer is mentioned quite a few times in the papers of the day. Here are a few snippits.

Great thanks for that! So William and Spencer are the same child. Sadly it does look as though Rosina ( or Roseanna as she appears on the 1860 census) died before they returned to the U.K. Don’t you agree? I can’t find any record of her death but as she’s not on 1861 or subsequent census that seems the logical conclusion.
What bad timing for potentially emigrating to USA

[nominal census day 1/6/1860]

1861 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7L7-QQH
[nominal census day 7/4/1861]

The opening shot of the ACW - "the shot heard round the world" as Americans say with typical modesty - was 12/4/1861

Looking at 1860 image, William was 2m old on 2/8/1860 (the day they were actually enumerated), so likely born in May, which would make him 10 m old at the beginning of the following April.

Is it possible that William and Spencer are the same person? William must have been born after the family left England as he's not on the passenger list and Spencer is only 10 months old on the 1861 census.

Glyn Report 28 Feb 2018 22:33

That was a great amount of information. When I was reading through it I see that when they sailed to New York they had Fred and Rosina. Then in New York on 1860 census they have William as well. The following year they have Spencer. When they return to Milton under Wychwood and are on 1861 census they only have Fred and Spencer.
Does anyone have a record for ( what I assume to be) the deaths of Rosina and William, probably in New York.

That’s fantastic everyone. Thank you. That explains the quick return as they wouldn’t want to be embroiled in the American Civil War. Great help

Looks like the family went over to New York in 1860 and came home pretty quickly. Not surprising though when you know that the American Civil War started in 1861 and the gouvernement were looking for volonteers to go and fight.

Glyn Report 27 Feb 2018 16:03

On the 1871 census record for Joseph and Mary Parslow ( also spelt Parsloe) from Milton under Wychwood Oxon it lists two children. One is Frederick, the other Spencer.
All the family for generations have lived in this area of the Cotswolds and Spencer has never been a family name. It says Spencer was born in Spencer, Iowa. Very odd!!
Some members of the family emigrated in 1874 to New Zealand, but they never returned. This entry looks as though the family went to Iowa and came back, but they were poor, Joseph an ag. lab. And this wasn’t normal for those days.
Can anyone shed light on this mysterious entry please?
