At the risk of sounding odd - is there any meet ups in local areas. What I could do with is someone locked in my backroom for three hours (sounds wrong i know!!!)

Any advice welcome - I live in Darlington and need someone with a good understanding of Scottish system

As ever i live in hope

You need to see those Census entries from below, to find (hopefully!) more about Birthplaces...

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/guides/census-returns

Chris :)

(then look around on google search, to see what is available for Ireland (or what County you need)

Genes/GR 'Meets', a thing of the past now I think, lol, used to be a regular thing, from most Counties, even the World!, back in the day, lol, different place GR then!. The 'General Board' (now called Chat) even had it's own 'Meets Thread'.

(we had Anne from Darlington then, if I remember, gawd' that's going back some!)

Your Local FHS Society, they are useful...

And, as you're now finding!, Family History as a hobby (or way of life, lol) doesn't come cheap...but rewards on 'finds' are priceless!.

(tip, get as many known, or proven facts as you can (may take time) build your 'Tree' on quality, not quantity, I say, lol)

Hi Christopher, I am no expert but I live near Glasgow and hope next week to go to the Mitchell library and can access SP as many times as I like, Scottish certs are brilliant compared to English certs, eg on a BC it tells you usually MMN, date of marriage, on DC it tells you all previous names which is great when someone has married 3 or 4 times, so if you send me names of a few you want to know about I will look, if you wanted a copy of a cert for your records then the last time I was there it was 50p.

Im originally from Middlesbrough.

Hi All - I am back on the grid after two years - back searching for McEwan. It's a long story but i semi retired but went back into things. Lockdown has given me some time. I am looking to try and (methodically) try to track down if any of the 5 Charles Mcewan and Bridget Semple Children survived. Thomas McEwan (who i originally thought was a farmer in in Ireland) was in fact a tinker going from Edinburgh to Glasgow etc.

Sandra - where in Middlesbrough were you from - I was Linthorpe and West Lane (a product of divorced parents)

To recap -
here are the five children's names and dates of birth and baptism again:

MCEWEN
ARTHUR
THOMAS MCEWEN/BRIDGET SEMPLE
M
6/9/1806
10/10/1806
Edinburgh, St Mary's Cathedral

MCEWAN
THOMAS
THOMAS MCEWAN/BRIDGET SEMPLE
M
18/2/1809
19/2/1809
Glasgow, St Andrew's

MCEWAN
MARY
THOMAS MCEWAN/BRIDGET SYMPLE
F
8/5/1811
9/6/1811
Paisley, St Mirin's

MACEWAN
JOHN
THOMAS MACEWAN/BRIDGET SIMPLE
M
22/3/1813
10/4/1813
Edinburgh, St Mary's Cathedral

MCEWEN
ROBERT
THOMAS MCEWEN/BRIDGET SEMPLE
M
24/6/1821
20/7/1821
Edinburgh, St Mary's Cathedral

Unfortunately, these are very common names.
Impossible to know if any subsequent marriages or deaths are theirs.

Thanks - what I cannot work out is that their alleged sibling (my Charles McEwan) had his DC with themes of the parents - but I cannot find any DC for these (that i can see). It could be they died early I suppose but even then would there have been a church record given they took the time dutifully to get a baptism.

Charles's death was easy to spot because the basic info (without looking at the actual cert) on SP shows his mother's maiden name:

MCEWAN
CHARLES
58
mms SEMPLE
1857
564/1 141
Greenock New or Middle

But not all death records showed that:

"The search box for the mother’s maiden name in the death records now includes the words ‘Not always recorded before 1974’. This is because between 1855 and 1973, there are a limited number of indexes for death entries that include the mother's maiden surname and age at death. When populating this field users should click on the box 'Included unrecorded mother’s maiden name’ to return all matches."
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/what-we-are-working-on

And if they died before 1855, the records are usually very sketchy, and seldom include mms - often no parents' names at all.

With such common names, without mms, and without knowing where or when they might have died, it's impossible to pinpoint any particular one.
