And just for clarity - because I am dim:
1. You have found McEwan - Semple and Nimmo in close proximity (The Vennel) 2. If i find Nmmo's daughter marriage certificate it may reveal whether her mother was a Semple and therefore that starts to firm up a link
Finally, how did a brother in law (Thomas Nimmo) know the details of his dead brother in laws parents - by being intricately linked to the family of course

Re the reference to Catherine Semple - Chris gave the link in the same post.
However, although she had a spirit-dealing business there, it doesn't mean she lived there.
No sign of her in Greenock in 1851 census, as far as I can see.

(apologies, just switched on, been shopping!)
Chris :)
(as you're here AG, lol, would that Marriage Cert. of Rose Nimmo in 1873, give anything on name of her Mother? (me, not knowing on things Scottish Certs, lol)
(trying to find name of her Mother, to see if she was a 'Semple', which made Charles M'Ewen (and it's variants!) the Brother in Law of Thomas Nimmo)
https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/22558317
(Thomas Nimmo is named on above 1857 Death Cert. of Charles)

Rose Ann's marriage again, with SP ref nos., if you want to have a look, Christopher.
NIMMO ROSE ANN TAYLOR JAMES 1873 564/2 14 Greenock East
It'll cost you 6 credits to view the image.
Yes, it would give names of both parents, including mms, plus father's occupation, and whether they were deceased or not.
She married only a fortnight after her father died.

I don't see her birth, however.
She's Rose Anne in 1871 and at marriage; Rose Ann in 1861; Rosina in 1851. Birth varies 1842-44, but always in Greenock.
No mother present in 1851 or 1871 - unless the transcription is wrong. 1861 there's a wife Charlett, from Ireland.
1851 - father is a fish hawker from Ireland. 1861: railway labourer, Ireland. 1871: railway official, Ireland Coming up in the world as time goes on.

Am sure there must be more on FMP Christopher, it's a case of 'playing' with names!, couldn't see a Baptism for Charles though...
(to be sure of things Irish, you would need to see his Birthplace from Census entries on ScotlandsPeople)

Both FMP and Ancestry offer a free 14-day trial period, so you can see what each has, and decide which one you want to join. Just remember to cancel before the end of the 14 days if you decide not to go ahead, or you'll automatically be charged for a year's subscription.
Ancestry are offering a big introductory discount for new members (and if an existing member's sub is due for renewal, remember you can start a "new "membership with a different email address from any you've previously used on Ancestry, and still get the discount)
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct
An advantage of FMP is that you get access to the 1939 register. But on the other hand, helpers here on the boards are always happy to look it up for you. It gives us a buzz - that's why we're here!
