It came out with a family member. She said gran was garrod I did not know that.I am illegitimate and have just found out some ancestors.I did find the name Alice garrod 1907 Dartford and the name wood the same year.So when my family said the name .I was garrod it put a spanner in the works .I cannot find anything about Alice Garrod.

A tree on Ancestry says her parents were James Garrod, and Annie Page.
It doesn't have any details of either of them, except that Annie was born in Ipswich (no date).

Did James change his name for some reason ???

So, for some reason, the family are sometimes calling themselves Wood, and sometimes Garrard/Garrod/other variation.

I still can't see any marriage between James and Annie, under either name.

Unless James was using yet another surname at the time!
Or Annie had been married before.
Maybe she was still married, and never married James.

I keep being drawn to this one (probably a red herring) - but can't find any of these people in 1891, to see which woman married which man:

Annie wasn't Garrod (or similar).

James was Garrod in 1881 and Garrard in 1871 (both censuses posted above).
Chris has also given his parents' details - Hobart and Harriet.

Annie's ms is given as Page in all the children's birth records we've found, so it seems certain that was her ms.
