You would think it would be easy to find the marriage of someone with names like Frederick Benjamin Day and Florence May Lee. Well. I spent hours yesterday without any success.

Frederick and Florence had a child (the only one I think) in 1941. Frederick was a Gunner 2066769 Royal Artillery. His trade was carpenter and joiner. They lived in Wembley.

Can anyone find what I cannot please?

Gerry

Gerry

Gerry Report 3 Feb 2018 12:40

I don't know. This is why I want to find the marriage cert so I can help identify them and their parents

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 3 Feb 2018 12:43

Not seeing the birth of the child in Wembley. Or have I misunderstood. Do you have the birth certificate for the child? What was the address.

EDIT: Person still living. It appears to be the child registered in Watford. (free bmd)

If so, it looks as though the parent's weren't married- the birth is registered in surname Day and Lee.

Gerry

Gerry Report 3 Feb 2018 12:55

I do have the birth cert, which is where I got all the info from. I have not given the child's name because its still alive, but it is not possible to speak to it. Makes life difficult.

AustinQ Report 3 Feb 2018 12:56

I understand the need for privacy-

But I'm not seeing the birth (on the indexes) in Wembley.

Have you found the couple on the electoral registers?

Gerry

Gerry Report 3 Feb 2018 13:05

Austin I have sent you a PM

Gerry

Gerry Report 3 Feb 2018 13:07

The birth was registered in Bushey Watford but the parents lived in Wembley. I should have said that before

Catherine

Catherine Report 3 Feb 2018 13:47

Have you considered the possibllity that the couple married overseas?
It's possible that he was Canadian or Australian or even a GI.

His army records may give a clue as to when he married, if he did marry.
It should also give you his date of birth and next of kin.

Do you have any idea when the couple were born?

There is a Florence May Lee, single in Hertfordshire on the 1939 reg, that there is no update on her name would suggest she didn't marry ( at least not in England or Wales). She would have been approx 28 at time of the birth.

Thanks all.

I cannot find an army record unfortunately.

I have no idea when they were born as all I have is what is on the birth cert for the child.

That may well be the right Florence. Without a marriage I can't see a way of proving it.

Why do I do this???? lol

I have been going round in circles all afternoon again, missing the rugby!!

If Frederick was in the Royal Artilliery in 1941 his army records will still be with the MOD.

Have a look here to see how to apply for them:-

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/request-records-of-deceased-service-personnel

They cost £30 and take several months to arrive. You have to be able to prove your relationship.

Long shot;

Frederick Day

Arrival Date: 17 Feb 1939

His name's scored through, so presumably he didn't travel - but he was due to embark at Bombay, he was a soldier, and his proposed address in the UK was

Have you checked electoral lists for the address of birth and address of parent(s)?

These won't be available for the war years, but might help link Florence May to a family.

Who was the informant of birth?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 4 Feb 2018 10:18

I think Gerry is having difficulties as the person born in 1941 is still living and he's trying not to give too many details.

I'll try and fill a few gaps- The child was born/ registered in Watford (hospital)

The usual address for parents was given as Wembley.

Checking the 1939 register for that address- Edwin and Frances (and their married daughter Eva)- shown here on the 1911, were living there.

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
91 George St Camberwell S E, Camberwell, London & Surrey, England

Edwin Day Head Married Male 45 1866 Kent Boughton Car Washer
Francis Day Wife Married Female 35 1876 Cumberland Gatehead -
Frederic Day Son Single Male 15 1896 Camberwell Surry Shop Boy
Edwin Day Son - Male 12 1899 Camberwell Surry School
Herbert Day Son - Male 9 1902 Camberwell Surry School
Emmie Day Daughter - Female 8 1903 Camberwell Surry School
Eva Day Daughter - Female 6 1905 Camberwell Surry School
Doris Day Daughter - Female 3 1908 Camberwell Surry
---------------------------------

The children have mother's maiden name Scott. Annoyingly, I don't see a registration for the son Frederick.
-------------------------------------

Assuming his middle name was Benjamin, there is this possible marriage in 1918 (If he was already married this could have been the reason he didn't marry Florence)

rst name(s) FREDERICK B
Last name DAY
Marriage quarter 4
Marriage year 1918
Spouse: May E Salisbury
District Lambeth
County London
Volume 1D Page number 680

(You would need the marriage certificate to confirm that he was the Frederick connected to Edwin and Frances)

They appear on the electoral registers together living in Camberwell, and then Battersea. (until 1930). May is sometimes listed as May Emily Elizabeth

There are these possible deaths for them:

First name(s) FREDERICK BENJAMIN
Last name DAY
Gender Male
Birth day 11 Oct 1894
Death quarter 4
Death year 1982
District Chatham
County Kent
Volume 16 Page 0636

First name(s) MAY EMILY E
Last name DAY
Gender Female
Birth day 10 Sept 1897
Death quarter 2
Death year 1973
District Lambeth
County London

---------------------------------------------------

I think the details for Florence, posted by Nyx above, look a good possibility.

Gerry

Gerry Report 4 Feb 2018 11:36

Thank you Austin for bringing it all together.

And I am very drawn to Nyx's suggestion

Rambling

Rambling Report 4 Feb 2018 12:08

Following on from Austin's post

Edwin and Francis were together in 1901,

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census
12, Mansion Street, Camberwell, London & Surrey, England

Edwin E Day Head Married Male 33 1868 Faversham, Kent, England Groom
Francis Day Wife Married Female 25 1876 Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England -
Frederick Day Son - Male 6 1895 Westminster, Middlesex, England

The 1911 census says that they have been married for 16 years. But I cannot find a marriage for them?

So if that Frederick is correct he may have been born to Francis but before she was with Edwin, or may be his child from a previous relationship as he is a bit older than Francis?

Andrew
