Find Ancestors

Please can anyone advise. I have my ancestor Joseph Exall 1778c - 1842 married Mary Sanders 1778c - 1856 married 1800 St Marys Portsea. No further info until 1841 census in Tenterden Kent. I have full history after that and have now found their graves and know about their children. I would like to know the ancestors of Joseph and Mary and Josephs occupation in Portsea and an address if this is possible.
Is there any way I can trace back before 1841? There were no witnesses for the wedding and no address given. Is there anywhere I can get this information. Thank you.

The 1824 Pigot's Directory for Tenterden lists him as a printer.
In 1826 a letter press printer.
In 1840 a letter press printer, vestry clerk and clerk to the Union.

There are a lot of interesting newspaper articles about Joseph Exall. It would appear he was Vestry clerk and said he lived in the parish since 1810.

Thank you Margaret This Joseph Exall is the son of Joseph and Mary from Portsea. He was a printer and vestry clerk..caught forging promisory notes 1847 ended up in van diemens land. Did well in New Zealand

Thank tou all. I would still like to know the ancestors of Joseph Exall Snr and his place of birth and occupation before he arrived in Tenterden..there is a gap from his marriage in 1800 to arrival in Tenterden around 1810

. I would still like to know where this family were between marriage in 1800 and arrival at Tenterden in about 1810. Their eldest daughter Mary seems to have been born at Limehouse ..Poplar born 1807 on the census 1841/2/ Did Joseph work there at that time? He seems to have had so many occupations and reinvented himself. There was a newpaper advert from a property company in London appointing him as land agent to deal with farm sales in the Tenterden area.in his early days in Kent.

trouble is the 1841 census only says he was not born in the county and maariage ref does not help as to his place of birth

Thanks but that would have made him just 15 when he married in 1800.
I was hoping that Joseph Exall born about 1781 came from around Portsea as did his wife Mary Sanders. Someone found her fathers name on the marriage cert but not his.
