Laird Report 11 Sep 2017 20:02

Thank you again to all you kind researchers who have yet again furthered my understanding of the family tree. I know I have two great threads going here and sometimes I probably just need to back track but then I forget :-S Mainly this new one has been great as it's help tie up a few loose ends pertaining to my great grandfather Hugh Frizzell.

So i've concluded he ended up orphaned after the death of his parents, no doubt the Quarriers will furnish more info in this regard. I've now obtained Hugh's parents death certificates so that confirms he must have been left orphaned. Some how the poor boy ended up in Canada or maybe it was a great time perhaps not if he determined to get back to Scotland. He met shortly after his return his wife, found employment as a Railway carter, joined the army to serve with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, got shot in Egypt and returned to serve with the Royal Engineers back in Scotland and then returned to employment relating to rail fathering about 10 kids, then he became a Civil Defence Warden during WW2 and died in that employ in 1944. I think he should have qualified for the Defence Medal but because his records as a CDW appear to no longer exist their is no way to claim his Defence medal. Facinating story though

:-)

Agree with most of Erin's translation but

is Greenock Infirmary actually Greenock Poorhouse - Smithson - Gourock
(google - Greenock, Smithson Poorhouse and Asylum) Greenock and Gourock are next to each other.

and Usual residence ? Duntocher Road, Greenock - there is one now and what was a village of Duntocher - probably absorbed into outer Glasgow these days. It's North side of the Erskine Bridge on the road s from Glasgow to Loch Lomond.

and is Margaret's maiden surname McAllister

Asylum employee - James Millar

Death registered February 28th at Gourock by John Macmillan Registrar

Thanks for the clearing up of the Dc Trans. ArgyllGran.

Who is wee Jessie when she's at home...?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Sep 2017 14:38

I expect Jessie is Hessie (or vice versa).

From a quick whizz through the other thread again, James (her husband) died 1891 and Hessie 1896.

GlasgowLass Report 12 Sep 2017 14:43

We went through all of this the last time and Laird ( Kerensky) said that he added it all to his tree?
These were all families from Antrim who moved to Greenock.

LOL Eringobragh... you even posted the correct spelling of Drumfrochar Road on this very thread yesterday !

Eringobragh1916 many thanks for explaining. One would assume TB was big amongst the working class at this time.

Laird Report 12 Sep 2017 15:02

GlassgowLass many thanks as always, more stuff to add to the tree. There's so much info on the other thread that I felt it would be easier to extract a few useful snippets here. I've wrote a letter and posted today to Quarriers as the online form was being picky about my email address.

Death of "wee Annie":

FRIZZEL
ANNIE
21
1912
569/ 35
Kilmacolm

10/08/1912, 4.30pm, at Bethesda Orphan Homes of Scotland
Father: James Frizzel, labourer, deceased.
Mother: Hessie Frizell, ms Brown, deceased.
Cause of death: Cardiac disease.
Informant: W Douglas, Assistant superintendent, Nittingshill Orphan Homes of Scotland.

Nittingshill was the first Quarrier's Home.

I can't see her in 1901.

Without spending any more credits, a free search of 1911 census shows her living in Kilmacolm. Spelled "Frizzle".

Crikey 21 how sad ?? it raises questions......why did Hugh not take her in? Could he not find her I wonder. Such a young age to die.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Sep 2017 16:50

And such a sad life (one presumes). She never knew her father; orphaned at approx 6; only sibling departs for Canada when she's 10. All topped off by heart disease and early death.

And why wasn't Hugh the informant who registered her death? As her NOK , you would think he should have. Did he not know? Did Quarriers not know where to contact him?

Have located her death record on the People of Scotland Registry thank you-

ArgyllGran here is the 1911 Census for Hugh's sister Annie Frizzell-

Not really sure it reveals much more about her life though...

ArgyllGran Report 12 Sep 2017 22:52

Here's Annie in 1901 - in Kilmacolm. I expect Hugh was taken there too at first, after their mother's death. Then he was sent almost immediately to Canada because he was old enough to work - or just because he was a boy. In which case he would know where Annie was - but maybe Quarriers didn't know where he was when she died. Or maybe he just left it to them to register her death :

Annie Friggle
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: Annie Friggle
Age: 12
Estimated birth year: abt 1889
Gender: Female
Where born: Greenock, Renfrewshire
Registration Number: 569
Registration district: Kilmalcolm
Civil Parish: Kilmalcolm
County: Renfrewshire
Address: Bridge Of Weir, Renfrewshire
ED: Kilmacolm Orphanage
Household schedule number: 1
LINE: 9
Roll: CSSCT1901_200

ArgyllGran Report 12 Sep 2017 23:19

And this looks like Hugh returning from Canada:

Mr Hugh Fizzell [Frizzell on image ]
in the UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
Name: Mr Hugh Fizzell
Birth Date: abt 1883
Age: 18
Port of Departure: Montréal, Québec, Canada
Arrival Date: 6 Oct 1901
Port of Arrival: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Lake Megantic
Shipping line: Canadian Pacific Line
Official Number: 89953

He's a labourer, as also listed on 1901 Canada census.
