(James Edward McConnell was born on the 1st January 1815 at Fermoy, County Cork, of Quentin and Elizabeth McConnell, he Scottish born and she English. Quentin was a millwright. After Quentin's early death in 1815 James was sent to Watshouse in Ayrshire into the care of an uncle. He was apprenticed to a Glasgow ironworks in 1828, Claud Girdwood & Co. in which a cousin had an interest. He then went to work at Bury's Clarence Foundry in Liverpool in 1837)

His birth record on parish registers on Scotlands People:

MCCONNEL
QUINTIN
Father: JAMES MCCONNEL/
0
04/03/1785
585/
10 226
Dailly

A few credits on SP would let you see the image of the original document, but it probably wouldn't tell you any more than above. Maybe his father's address.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Aug 2017 12:09

A couple of possibilities for his parents' marriage:

MCCONNEL
JAMES
SARAH CRAWFORD/FR446 (FR446)
02/05/1782
585/
10 492
Dailly

MCCONNEL
JAMES
AGNES DAVIDSON/FR428 (FR428)
14/12/1775
585/
10 474
Dailly

EDIT:

A tree on Ancestry says his mother was Agnes McClarking, born 1765.
No proof offered.

The tree says James & Agnes married in Dailly on 13/12/1775, but I can't find any such marriage on SP.

The Agnes Davidson marriage above is only one day out from that.

The Ancestry tree lists a large number of siblings for Quentin.

From SP, this is one of them - though can't prove that's the right James, without comparing the image with that of Quentin's birth, in case of address:

MCCONNEL

ALEXANDER
JAMES MCCONNEL/
0
10/03/1787
585/
10 235
Dailly

According to the tree, other siblings were born variously in Lanarkshire, Dailly, and County Down.

From SP, this is the birth of one of them, giving mother as Davidson:

MCCONNEL

JAMES MCCONNEL/AGNES DAVIDSON FR278 (FR278)

ArgyllGran Report 23 Aug 2017 12:43

Will look it up in a minute, Chris!

Re siblings - the tree isn't to be trusted!
One sibling, Richard, it says was born 1790 in County Down, but the "proof" attached is for a Richard baptised 1833 in Dublin, parents William and Mary Anne !

Another supposed sibling, born 1795 in Blantyre, has parents (per SP) James McConnell and Agnes McClurkin. I'm sure this is a completely different couple, though can't find their marriage.

Re Quentin's death - the dodgy tree says he died before 1820, and suggests Dailly.

I can't find his death anywhere, I'm afraid - not Dailly (or Scotland as a whole), nor Ireland. Not anywhere on Ancestry or FS.
Maybe someone with more access to Irish records will find something?

From FS:

Other information in the record of Quintin Mcconnel
from Scotland Births and Baptisms
Name Quintin Mcconnel
Gender Male
Christening Date 24 Sep 1820
Christening Place DAILLY,AYR,SCOTLAND
Birth Date 17 Sep 1820
Father's Name Quintin Mcconnel
Mother's Name Elizabeth Brandbury

If the father of this child is Pauline's Quintin, then he couldn't have died in 1815.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Aug 2017 19:02

I think 1885 is a mistake - she means 1785.

I don't see a marriage for Quentin and Elizabeth - but then it would only be in the old parish records, which aren't exhaustive.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Aug 2017 19:08

If you're sure about Elizabeth's YOB, Pauline, where was she born?

I don't see her birth in Scotland, at least.
