Presumably you were aware of this birth in the Channel Isles: |

Yes I believe this is Ena my mother in law living with her stepfather. It is understood that she also had a stepmother. Will try to find a record of Frederick's second marriage and possible death of that wife. Also her stepbrother Roland was believed to have come to Lincolnshire too. Thank you. |

If that's Frederick on the 1939, then this looks to be his death: |

If that date of birth for Frederich Smith is correct, then registered June quarter 1870. |

Chris, that looks really good! Excellent sleuthing from you. Certainly explains the name Graham being used. Well done! |

(well looks to be her, it started with an idea to look for a John Smart with wife Caroline on Census, and that followed, then putting caroline smart croughton on newspaper search) |

Brilliant. Thanks everyone. Some of the most recent events are known to us and the Croughton area Smarts I had found but discounted. The article concerning maintenance is new to us though. Will digest all your information and see what happens. The 1939 info is definitely Ena and stepfather. We know Roland was in Lincolnshire just after WWIi until his death after marrying aunt Helen in Palestine. Sorry error re Frederick George marriage certificate just gives Frederick. Ena Frances was born at Heath House Tendring which we think was a Workhouse. Thanks again. |

Another coincidence - Roland had a daughter who he named Priscilla !!!! If it is Caroline Priscilla as in newspaper article where does Winifred come from and why did Ena put John Smith deceased on her marriage certificate ? |
