Interesting!!
It may be a good idea to get a copy of her will. It may give more information on there.

I do not think it unusual for a landlady of a pub to leave a large amount as when they retire, depending on whether or not they owned the pub, they would probably need to live somewhere ( "by the sea" ). Savings of this size though does surprise.

With reference to the large increase of money....my great grandparents were in the pub trade. When he died in 1897, he left £570 8s 0d, resworn a year later at £1,170 8s 0d.

When she died in 1922, she left £9,722 15s 6d

The probate and increase in value is expected, regardless of what trade they were in. I believe that when any assets (eg a house) are held jointly they automatically go to the surviving partner and are not valued as part of the estate. It is on the death of the surviving partner they would be valued.
